Would this not cause issues if one of the exhaust valves happened to not be shut?

Yeah, I'm with the people who agree this might be a bad idea! Most of our tired engines probably aren't perfectly sealed at this point.

Good point. Back to soapy water squirted on the joints while engine running...

Well, I talked to dad and he agrees with the person who posted the article about the pressure thing, so I guess you can ignore my reservations!

Perhaps I'll give this a try sometime on a less than critical car.

most older cars have slight exhaust leaks all over the system. I suspect is not really the problem unless it is bad enough to allow exhaust gases into the car, or too loud. if they are bad enough to matter you usually can feel them by hand, without touching the exhaust pipe, just run you open palm along the exhaust system, including all of the joints and gaskets. you will feel the puffs of warm exhaust. I always do this around the exhaust manifold/head pipe joint on most Tercels. Many have slight leaks there too. Only if it is large or noticeably loud do I do anything about it.

If you have a helper hold a rag over the tailpipe it makes it easier to find smaller leaks.
