Weber Throttle Shaft Bearings & Caution

Post by ARCHINSTL »

I recently installed the Weber sealed bearing replacements for the OE plastic bushings, as I was getting a bit of throttle hangup; when releasing the accelerator, the RPMs did not drop to the usual 8-900, but to 11-1200. A tap of the pedal fixed it, but it was evident that the bushings were wearing out and causing binding.
I recalled https://tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtopic.php? ... ing#p33610, so ordered the bearings and base gasket from Pegasus Racing for $25, including USPS shipping (much cheaper than UPS or FedEx!).
The installation was easy and the bearings work like a charm - MUCH smoother and no binding!
There is also a 6-minute video well worth watching at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abi40OrA8uY

A caution, though - just as the Weber installation instructions state, only tighten the shaft nut finger-tight, plus one flat, and then use the locktab washer. I tightened it too tight and was then getting a stumble when the accelerator was floored in any gear - this indicated a vacuum leak. Sure enough, loosening the nut, tapping the shaft, and retightening per directions cured the stumble. Evidently, when I did the Weber install back in 2008, I followed the directions...
