Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

I used some silicone grease (aka plumber's grease) to ease it on - was apprehensive about using petro-based grease.
For those contemplating this - and I highly recommend the replacement - see https://tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6437
When the rubber boot deteriorates (after all, they are approaching 30 years), it can permit water to enter the shift lever compartment and cause some major rust on the shaft.

that last t4 i fixed up had a lot of play in the shifter even with new bushings down there. i looked at the grooves in the big ball of the shifter and they were really chewed up so i built them back up with JB weld and filed them till the surfaces were smooth and flat. it made a huge difference, worked great. hope it holds up but we'll see.

Heres a bump for an old thread. I didn't know mine was that bad until I seen how a new one looks... Would replacing this make the shifter tighter?
