Wow. The block in my garage looks the same as my block did before, so its used as comparison... and I have one question. WHAT IS THAT SHINY THING UNDER MY HOOD?
Simple Green in a 1:1 mix with water, some work with a toothbrush and steel wool. Rinsing with a hose 7 times, followed by a thorough powerwashing. Flooded my distributor, but the PBBlaster helped me start her up.

ummmm..... if Photobucket will process the pictures.....

Kerosene... My concern would be that certain elder rubber parts, just natural rubber vs. Viton or the likes, would break down. I was also concerned for the Simple Green, but when I tossed my old heater hose in a mix of 2 SG 1 water, and waited for 3 hours, and I saw no visible signs of breakdown, and it didn't crack up when I bent it, so my concern was lessened.
I figure that I could've gotten by just fine without the toothbrush or steel wool, just the simple green soaking in for a bit then the pressure wash. I just wanted it to GLEAM to I polished her up good. Now I'm waiting for an oil leak to develop so I can decide if I need to do a lower rebuild with new gaskets and seals, or what needs to be done. If I can get the justification with my mom, she might give me a loan to have the pistons overbored, new bearings, all that good stuff. Who knows, she might even be willing to let me get a remanufactured 4AC or something along those lines.

If you do decide to keep the 3a-c, clean the block. Most crusty oil mess is found below the head gasket.

If the block is aluminum I have a HUGE amount of work to do. Looks and feels iron though?

The 3AC uses an iron block, as did most toyotas from the 1980's. The 3sgte is known for its iron block and how it can withstand alot of power (i forget the HP and Torque specs that it can withstand.)

Hit the iron block with a good degrease and power wash it off. If you have time, paint the fresh block black again. It will look brand new. Use a magnet if you are unsure of a metal. Iron, nickle and cobalt are magnetic. Aluminum scratches easily and magnesium will catch fire under high heat.

The type of degreaser I use is Simple Green Automotive degreaser. It works pretty good. I used it on my quad and that thing is always a greasy mess.

VHT High temp enamel. 500 Degree is enough. Use the 1500 degree stuff for exhaust parts. This paint can be found in just about any autoparts store for around $5 a can. Gunk kicks simple greens ass when it comes to baked on oil. Simple greens good for everything else.

I buy Simple Green concentrate from Sam's. For the bottom end, I may use some acid cleaner my dad has followed by a powerrinse and then some simple green followed by powerrinse. The Simple Green loosened the baked on crap enough that my powerwasher could rip it clean off. I need to get in close enough to the bottom to get it. I'll have to build some sort of elevated ramp out of the planks I have laying around.
Wish I had a real lift lol. Ramps are good for only somethings.

I cleaned the head on my Geo.... NOWHERE near as shiny... More of a dull grey. Felt and looked otherwise like aluminum.
