Icelandic tercel

Post by scotisha »

I was in Iceland a couple of weeks ago and I saw this red beauty! Not sure what a RV special is though :)

oh wow, that's awesome! i love the stripe on the side and matched colour on the side mirror. those 14" wheels look similar to the stock mazda precidia wheels but not quite. i wonder what they're from.

Also notice the body-color top windshield trim strip. Looks good, but I wonder why the rest of the surround strip was not done?
As dlb mentioned, the mirrors are cool. Wonder what the purpose of the black strip above the last rear window is about?
Thanks!

for some reason the paint/rubber coating comes off the corners frist sometimes. My wife's mazda does that.

the air damn under the bumper looks different too, and notice the shoulder belt mount on the passenger side, also different from the NA Tercel. I take two of those, send them over please.

I would say those look like Mazda wheels.

The 4wd Tercel was very common in Iceland and quite a few of them still survive. Very practical cars in icelandic conditions.

I think about half the Tercels in Iceland were RV specials. I have had both kinds and I think the only difference between them and the others were the tremendously cool and comfortable plaid seats!!!

The matched colour side mirrors came only on 1988 models.

Nearly all Tercels In Iceland had some kind of stripe kits. There were a number of different kinds.

Nice country specific information! It makes sense that they would be popular there. Just put those huge highland tackling tires on it and it would fit right in with all those off-road SUV's :). Where abouts do you live in Iceland?

That's the standard eurobumper/skirt combo, I do believe. They all look like this here in Iceland, anyway. I think you're right about the mazda wheels, though

I found this photo of an '88 Sprinter Carib (JDM version/second gen Tercel to the rest of the world) which has these peppershaker wheels. So I guess they're original? It also has the body-color side mirrors, so it's pretty likely that this is the RV version in its JDM form.

i have one of those. here in canada, it's simply called a 4wd corolla wagon. in the US, it's called a corolla all-trac. i love them. you can see the similarities in design between it and the tercel but they really are quite different beasts.

those alloy wheels are stock on the 4wd corolla wagons over here. they are 13" (disregard my previous post where i thought they were from a mazda mx-3). my corolla had those wheels but i moved up to 14" and 15" wheels, and put the pepper shakers (great name for them, btw) on the last project tercel:

Looks great in bronze! And I really like the US/Canadian type grill and headlight setup. Those bumpers are the worst though, way too big ;)

I take no credit for naming the pepper shakers btw, I think all Brits call these type wheels pepper pots. A lot of 80's Escorts and Fiestas came with them, even a few others.

You're right about the Corolla Wagon too, I got confused because the Tercel had a Carib trim package as well, in Japan.

But man, I wish my paint looked as good as yours!

Hey, jimcrazy - you got the cool Miata wheels! I could not find them in STL in '05, so got the Daisy version.
And ffutr/dlb - I like those "pepper shakers'' - neat name, too!
