So I picked up our second T4WD today, its unofficially named 'Ulysses' the head was almost off today, but had to call it due to rain in my 'working environment' It was towed about 15 miles to the street in front of my cousin's house. I hope the head will be off tomorrow so i can diagnose its main hang up. And for fifty bucks, how could you go wrong!? :D

You could only go wrong if there was a body in it. And even then...

I am jealous, I want as many $50 Tercels as I can find. I have bought 2 for $100, and got two on trade for auto repairs, and paid $200 for my first one, but never $50. I missed getting one that only needed a head gasket for free, it ended up in a wrecking yard because a low life tow truck operator got there first and took it straight to a wrecking yard for $150.

Another great Tercel4wd saved from the crusher! Keep up the good work.

Ugh. Holey piston. If anyone needs bits and pieces - shoot me a pm and an address. We can work out the details from there. I have to get it out of the street quick, so I'll only be shipping off small accessories. What a drag :(

What happened? You can't fix it, so you're parting it out?

I bought this car knowing if it was bottom end I wouldn't have the time or resources here to fix it. I had high hopes for an easy repair - and my cousin already wants it gone. I can never find these deals when I have space to keep the cars!

Sad! :-( At least you're not out $200+. You'll make more in parting it out than what you paid for it, so it's not a complete loss. Use the money you make for parts and upgrades to your other Tercel.

Were you hoping to part it from the get go or flip it if it were an easy fix or make it a driver for you? I ask since if the engine is already toast, could you find a parts engine at the junkyard, grab a piston off it and slap it in? You'd have to pull the oil pan and head, but you should be able to do it all with the engine still in the car. All you'd have to do on the crankshaft is take the two bolts holding the piston arm in place. Worst case is the car still won't work, best case is it will be a magic piston and turn the car into a 400mph Ferrari that gets 600 mpg and comes with a bevy of blondes. On second thought I think best case is that it might run normal, but it doesn't hurt to dream though.

Pistons are only about $25 for new ones, but it just as well to get one from a wrecking yard. You have to drop the cross member and pull the pan, than you can remove the piston without pulling the engine. of course if you have the head off already it is not difficult at this point to pull the short block using a lifting strap and an 8 foot long 4x4. One guy at each end and you lift the short block up and out. easier than you might think, you do not need a hoist for this small of an engine. You can get the parts you need and have it done on a Saturday. Better than junking an otherwise good Tercel4wd (and much more profitable than parting it out).

You can even get a long block for about $100 from a self service wrecking yard rather than replace the pistons and rings.

i should have a servicable piston and rod assembly from an '85 engine i was going to rebuild years ago, but wound up swapping the complete engine. don't think it has the rings or bearings tho. $25 shipping- included (beats the hell out of having to pull one out in the boneyard!) let me know if you're interested. thanx.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!
