Pac NW project fun car!

Post by teranfirbt »

Hey everyone, a friend sent me here. Haven't got a Tercel yet, gonna be getting one for free with a BHG and no carb next weekend. I'm definitely no stranger to Toyota though, I've had my '83 Celica GT-S for about 7 years now. It's had the original 22RE replaced with a 2RZ, the suspension has been gone through, and I'm rocking a carputer. Here's a few pictures of her, and I'll make sure and get pictures of the Tercel up once I have that safe in my garage.

Phew, that's a lot of pictures, lol.
Anyway, good to meet everyone, I'm hoping to learn a lot, I've got all kinds of learning curve with the Tercel.

Nice looking car, same color as mine. A good color for a sleeper. It looks like someone swapped out a corolla wheel for the Tercel wheel on the drivers side front. The rear in the picture is the stock Tercel wheel.

So, what are your plans for the Tercel? Gonna do an engine swap?

Teran, I will be heading up to washington for the meet they're having up there. Wanna drive together? My girlfriend's going with me.

Also, if you ever want to head up into the woods with your tercel, I know the alsea/prairie mountain area very, very well. I can also show you some amazing spots where the driving factor comes in.

You're talking about the meet on August 30th? I had thought about it, I'd probably go in the Celica though, it's much nicer on the freeway, and the Tercel still isn't quite up to 100% yet, small oil leak and needs a new hatch glass (some asshole broke mine out in my driveway >_>). I've got the glass, just need to put it in. Wheeling sounds fun though, once I get the oil leak taken care of. Gotta try out EL :P.

Petros: I'm not 100% sure of the history, but I know it does run really well, especially with the Weber. No real plans for anything other than maintenance for the foreseeable future, I picked it up mostly to keep miles off the Celica while I'm still in college.

Finally got the oil leak fixed, and she's getting a new radiator this weekend (The one in there is totally sketchtastic),
I also redid the Hella driving light brackets (I had them just bolted to the grill mounts...)

Way more stable. Now I just need to get a set up stone shields for the lights...
Future plans have changed, I'm going to be building a safari rack for it soonish, then next summer it's going to get a carputer, big alternator upgrade, audio upgrade, probably a set of AW11 MR2 wheels and tires, trying to decide on a bullbar design.... Just like my Celica, the Tercel will be a project *sigh*

True to form, the Tercel has turned into more of a project than I intended. Yesterday I fitted up the 36-1 trigger wheel, VR sensor, and Ford coil packs for wasted spark:

After that, I just need to wire in the Megasquirt to run it all. Considering I have to run 20° of base advance for the thing to run right, and the distributor clicks when it running, I knew repairs were in order. With my desire for control, wasted spark seemed like a logical choice : P
The full fuel injection conversion is set to commence later this summer.

Seriously true to form, the Tercel is becoming a true project car. For the last few weeks I've been putting these together in my free time:

So, what was originally a set of CBR600 throttles on a bench quickly became CBR600 throttles mounted to a cylinder head...
WP_20130317_005 (1).jpg
Then with a little electrical wizardry became CBR600 throttles controlled by Megasquirt.

Very cool. eager to hear how they run. It will be interesting to know what kind of economy you get once they are dialed in.
