My 84 terk!

Post by alqpskwod »

Hi !
My name is patrick and im from south carolina.
I was out roaming around one day and found this little thing sitting by the road cold and all alone with a for sale sign on it.
I stop to talk to the gentleman which owned the car and asked him how much and whats wrong.
He told me the car belonged to his dad which had passed and that it had been stored for the last 7 years in his shop.
As for the price he told me he was only asking what he thought the car was worth....it started up but wouldnt run as soon as you stepped on the gas.
he told me he had done some work on the carb to try to get it running but it wouldnt do anything but idle at 3k rpm .
so i said id like to buy the little car ....knowing what it was and that it was a rare find to not be hardly rust free let alone running.
plus while i was scoping the car i saw it had 134 (original) thousand miles on it. i knew from past experience that was nothing for a little yota.
So as i proceded to negotiate the original asking price of $650 i walked away paying $500 with title in hand.

Afterwards when i got the car home i had my work cut out for me.
being that im an 82 model myself lol i remember very little about these cars.
the car ran but would consitantly idle at 3k rpm with no throttle
i started with the tank lines and carb.
(1) i marbled the tank
(2) blew out all the fuel lines to make sure they were clear
(3) rebuit the original asian carb
(4) had fun tuning the 3-ac and carb together lol

now the car will idle at around 650 to 900 rpm depending on its mood but it is now a drivable car.
i guess the next feet is changing over to a weber 32/36 later on for now imma have fun driving it while the asian is half way working lol
thanks for letting me join the community and this is my project
all my progress i owe to this forum and the info here thanks guys i hope i can give back in some way in the future !

Welcome!
It looks sweet, esp. with the low mileage.
No rust?

Not much a little in the hatch area but the rest of the common cancer spots are normal this car has never left my state so its pretty rust free especially underneath!
And nice to meet you! :)

Thanks ...yeah I'm still digging in the mechanical aspect of the car...the interior is next and the guy I bought the car from had 2 gallons of original paint made so I will eventually paint it but that will be last...the interior is OK but the seats need cleaning they have water spots in the material I may try to clean them as I used to work at a detail shop a few trim pieces are dry rotted "just the strips on the end of the head liner by the front windshield I guess this is normal wear for a 30 year old dried out piece of plastic Lol

And thanks for the welcome :)

Welcome to the forum nice find

When you did the carb did you change out all the vac lines and confirm their routed right?
That would be next on my list :oldgeek:

Nice score!

I have to ask, what exactly does 'marbled the tank' mean?

Thanks for making me feel welcome....
Yeah I traced them all down to the best of my understanding according to the diagram ....I found 2 on the carb criss crossed from the last carb rebuild ...but the one I found by accident was the bottom one on the dist. The one on the very bottom that comes off the metal line behind the engine ...the line was bent in a fashion under the firewallci couldn't see it at first but boy whatca difference when I hooked it back up Lol .

Its a old school remedy for tanks you can't get your hands in you buy a big bag of marbles and shake thetank to beat the rust out

Yeah there was rust the car sat in a shop for 7 years.
Without a tank coating its just a "get by" with 3 fuel filters till I can afford a tank THATS worth keeping...how ever I check the filters every day and 1 of the 3 filters is cleanable I put it closest to the tank. But so far theve all been clean ..honestly marbling a tank is only a old time bandaid and bailing wire trick but after around a year or so it will become a problem again. :) but I plan on buying a brand new tank in a few months I found one for like 130 or so is that a good price ?

Indeed :) thanks for the welcome :0

The body is pretty solid most of my rust problems are only surface ATM .the driver side of the hatch buy the tail light and near the battery box....most likely caused by acid from the battery much like the first 3 gens of Datsun z cars the 240,260,and 280z`s were know to rust so bad by the battery box that some of them litterly broke right there in the frame...it does worry me some but it appears to not been that long ago before it made it past the paint I believe it happened while it was stored for years with the battery left in it .

I dunno, I've never heard of people replacing tanks that often because they sat. With use of HEET every now and then and keeping your fuel filter clean you should be good!
