Wringer

Post by irowiki »

Not really the official name yet, but the wife said "it looks like it has been through the wringer"

There's a fun electric fuel pump in the engine bay...with a switch for it under the dash just hanging there. More pictures later.

Link has videos of us trying to move her and her interior condition. (look for the little play button in the upper right of the pictures)

She has about as much power as a motorized wheel chair, one that's 10 years old and half dead to boot. This poor thing could barely move on her own power, it was hilarious to watch Paul try to drive her off our neighbour's driveway where we unloaded.

some people when putting in an electric fuel pump add the extra "kill" switch. 1) it prevents theft, and 2) in an accident it gives a quick way to cut off the fuel pump so it does continue to pump fuel once the engine is stopped.

That was the car that needed the head gasket? Tell us about your trip to recover the car, and what you have learned about it. Please.

Yeah this is the head gasket car. He didn't want me fixing it in his driveway with having the baby around so he actually delivered it to our doorstep!

So far, she's low on power, looks like bad engine mounts (the engine shakes the whole car, or that could just be the two dead cylinders?), half the carpet is missing, the rear hatch latch is stuck in the lock position, and there's wires everywhere.

There's also a ticking noise that goes away with the clutch in, bad pilot bearing, or is that the throwout bearing?

How much did this car set you back? Running on two cylinders would definitely shake the whole car. Do a compression test yet?

250 for the car and I paid him 150 to drive it up here

We'd have spent about that much in gas and hotel and food if we had done down ourselves, and needing to fix it there.

Now we can fix it on our own time at home. Have not done anything to her yet still fixing the air conditioner on Party.

not a bad deal for a delivered car, even with the work it needs. what ever it is missing, if you can not buy it, someone on the forum will have it for you.

Just had a look at your videos. Quite the interior.
Body wise it looks pretty good. No rot like we have up here.

Wringer is a great name!

ticking, grinding, growling, etc noise while the clutch pedal is depressed is likely the pilot and/or throwout bearing -- they both spin at the same time. if it makes the sound when the pedal is released, that is probably the input shaft bearing. this is because when the pedal is depressed, the pilot and throwout bearings allow the engine side to keep spinning while disconnecting it from the trans side. once the pedal is released, the engine and trans are then 'connected' via the clutch, and the ISB spins with the input shaft.

when the ISB is going bad, it will usually sound worse at low RPM and improve at higher RPM as centrifugal force holds things firm. if the ticking is constant and doesn't change, it might just be something faulty in the clutch. that would be a much better job than the ISB.

David: The engine sounds so bad right now I have a hard time pinning it down further, but I will investigate more once the engine is smoother.

larry: I'll check that out, thank you

The interior isn't as bad as Sassy or Paddle were... the seats are good, for example.

Depending how it drives (haven't tried a 4.1 yet) might sell buck and keep new one as a beater...
