Rebuilt the front end and fixed some oil leaks + bonus skid plate mod

Post by boreben »

I finally got around to taking on some of the much needed repairs on ol' tan lightning.

-ball joints
-tie rods (inner and outer)
-wheel bearings & seals
-CV boots & axle seals
-sway bar end bushings
-sway bar to frame bushings
-strut tops
-cleaned and painted: everything
-intake/exhaust manifold gasket
-deleted EGR
-modified/fixed throttle cable mount
-timing belt
-crank and camshaft seals
-blacked out wheel wells

*bonus* new skid plate!

Looks great! What kind of paint did you use for the wheel wells?

I hope the slow children don't miss their sign :)

I used Ace Hardware branded Rust Stopper paint. I doubt it will last long, despite my extensive prep work, but it looks good now. I bought the "Slow Children" sign on Amazon, so as not to place any actual children in danger :)

Update: I did some more work to make ol' Tan Lightning look a little nicer and fix some things that were broken.

And for some reason it's posting my pics in reverse order. I'll fix whatever is wrong tomorrow.

Great speaker covers. Now to complete the Tercel nerd effect, you need to take some of that plaid fabric and make a matching vest and hat to wear for driving in your tercel. it would be perfect with a bow tie and dark sunglasses.

Thanks! I made the boots and speaker covers out of an old shirt that I found at a thrift store. It was an easy and fun afternoon project and a vast improvement over the crappy old stuff.I would love to find some similar looking upholstery fabric to make new seat covers with.

That's great boreben. How heavy was the material, or did you sew it over the old boots?

It was a cotton flannel shirt. I disassembled the OE boots and used them as a pattern to sew up new ones. I doubt they'll last 30 years, but then again neither did the OE boots. If I can find some plaid upholstery fabric to make new seat covers out of some day, I'll remake them out of that.
