it goes into second. it's first gear that is half cut off in the animation.

Nice graphic. the action of the trans is often confusing because all of the gears are always engaged with each other and always turning. IT is the spline shaft that locks the appropriate gear to the main shaft (though the shift lever and shift forks) that causes the power transmission through the gear cluster to go from the input shaft, to the jack or side shaft, and back up to the output shaft.
