i think the weber is the single best bang-for-your-buck mod for anyone wanting more responsiveness and power. however, it does have some drawbacks. in cold, humid climates it tends to ice up after about 5 minutes of running. this goes away after another 5 minutes but it's annoying. due to the carb-to-manifold adapter, some people find they need to cut a hole and add a hood scoop for the air filter to clear the hood unless they delete the phenolic spacer from the set up. some people have also found the stock jets to provide lousy performance and fuel economy while others have had zero issues with them and got even better mileage than with the stock carb.

another easy way to get a bit more power is to advance the timing from 5* to 10* BTDC. you must disconnect and plug the vacuum hoses that go to the upper distributor advance canister when setting the timing, than reconnect them afterwards.

dib, thanks, I will try advancing the timming first and see how that works. Another question it has a bottom end and clean top end done, what gas milage should I be getting? It's average at the present time about 23 mpg.

With my first Tercel I had the stock carburetor renewed and with my second I altered to the Weber 32//36. I would say that the renewed carb was a lot better than the finicky 32/36 especially as the factory carb has the auto choke. Didn't really get too much of a power benefit with the weber. If your existing carb is working ok I wouldn't change it. I would look at Petros's exchanged camshaft as a better performance bang for you buck.

i was driving my last al25 daily for over 3 months in temps ranging from freezing to 15* C, primarily city driving, and averaged 33 mpg. if you're getting 23 mpg, i would say something is definitely wrong. see #6 in the FAQ.

Yes, like stepping on the gas and moving, 33mpg, wow that's great. Do they still have carburetor repair kits?

yeah 23mpg is pretty rough you should easily get 33mpg on the highway if you keep the speed below 60mph and feather the throttle a bit more - you don't have to hyper mile but see how you go for a tank. perhaps it just need some carby cleaning fluid? from old residual petrol when it was stored. does it idle ok? Kits where available on ebay etc. not sure about these days.

I don't know if you mentioned your gearbox oil but I would look at replacing it one popular way is to do a flush with ATF and then get a good synthetic or synthetic/mineral blend. Gearboxes are these cars Achilles tendon so take it easy with the quick gear changes until you have given it a flush.

carb rebuild kits are still available here in north america, they're around $40 and sometimes cheaper.
