they make rebuild kits for the a/c compressors that are not too costly (new seals and bearings). a re-manufactured a/c compressor costs about $500 in the states, but they are usually reliable and just need new seals.

Best you find the leak first, it might just be an o-ring on a hose connection and not the compressor.

It is important to ALWAYS first diagnose the problem BEFORE you try and fix it.

They don't call it that here in the states!

Good luck! I'm sure you'll convince it to drop smoking, smoking is very unhealthy.
But...did you try hitting it with a hammer?

Haha

I assume just valve stem seals
Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Never smokes during any other instance only at 100kmph or more

with bad valve stem seals usually you get more smoke at start up, and when down shifting or using the engine to slow down.

You might try a Seafoam treatment if you have something like that available down under. It is strong solvent you put in the with the motor oil and run it for a while, cleans up gunk and goop deposited around the rings and allows it to seal better. does not always work, but worth a try.

Amen to seafoam. I use that a ton. https://youtu.be/qppjXdGXpyc

i have chucked some seafoam type treatment twice now. Second time i sprayed it right in the barrel and let it sit for ages. Even cranked the motor with the plug caps off to circulate it.

If it was rings would it not smoke more often

valve stem seals are inexpensive, typically about $12 for the set of eight. You need a special tool to remove the valve spring keepers and retainer with the head still on it, some auto parts stores rent the tool. You an replace all of the valve stem seals without removing the head this way, it is somewhat tedious work but it can be done inexpensively, might be worth a try as a do-it-yourself project. Rather costly to pay a repair shop to do it.

If you do replace the valve stem seals, make sure that piston is at top dead center so you do not accidentally drop the valve down into the cylinder when the keepers/retainer/spring is off the end of the valve stem. If that happens, than the head will have to come off, no way around it.

Well i bought some valve stem seals and a compressor just waiting for them to arrive.

I think i fixed the problem though as i installed a low pressure electronic fuel pump and i think the old mechanical fuel pump was weeping into the rocker cover causing various problems.

I am waiting on a new pcv valve too but have fitted new cvs new rotor cap and button and leads. Fine tuned the carby to start a bit easier.

Anyone know how to setup the choke idle on a 32 36? I have set the butterflys but i thought it should rev higher for a while on startup but if anything idles lower than warm condition idle. Think it may have something to do with the adjustment screw that faces the front of the car.

So anyway fitted

Rotor cap and button
New leads
Electronic fuel pump
New cvs
New pcv
New valve stem seals

No more smoking and the car no longer reeks of petrol when I turn it off. Starts easier and with all the above a much nicer car to drive.

that engine looks too clean to be a real engine. do you actually drive it, or does it sit in a garage all its life?

you have a 4a in it? factory is 3a, so you got a better, more powerful engine upgrade. Looking good.

Haha the whole car is that clean.
Combination of the car being a really clean one owner and me being OCD.

The engine I put in from a barn find ae86 that had 24 thousand ks on the odo which is a touch under 15 thousand miles for you yanks.

Car gets driven a couple of times a week. Certainly more now that I can go on highway and not smoke out everyone behind me. My commute to work is close and low speed so it hasn't been an issue.

I took the car out last night for a highway run and it sits comfy at 125 with zero smoke so im quite pleased.

Only issue with the car im trying to fix now is:
Webber choke idle
Slight hesitation at low speed low throttle input cruising
Get the aircon working again
Stop moisture getting in the headlights

If anyone has recommendations for the above would appreciate input.

Forgot to mention before I did valve stem seals I did a dry compression test and got 155 on all 4 pots so eliminates any fear I had about rings.
