Hey guys, new to forum but just picked myself up an 84' SR5 with 198000 miles on her! I figured I'd show her off a little.

KLEEN! as the old used car ads used to say.
No rust underneath, either? Where did it live?

Also, i was having carb troubles, but i sorted it out mostly, it just hesitates now once it is warmed up. The carb is just so complicated and i was curious as to how easy the webber conversion is?

do not be intmidated by the carb, it does have a lot of systems but all are simple and help drivablablity in both cold and hot weather, and improve economy plus reduce emissions. Testing each system is easy and straightforward, you just take each system one at a time. The Factory Service Manual (FSM) available for free download on this forum, has an excellent trouble shooting guild for the fuel system and takes you through each system test. once you work your way throght those tests once it becomes much eaisier to sort out next time (like 20 min to test most of the systems). Like anything else, once you know what all those vac lines are doing and what each of the thingys do, it is not do intimidating.

Many here like the weber, and is a costly alternative to the stock carb (I think only worth it if the stock carb was not rebuildable and you could not get a replacement). The weber would not be legal in California and other states that require emissions testing.

If you have hesitation it is most likely a vacuum leak somewhere or the accelrator pump is weak or ineffective. check the condition and the routing of all of the vac lines (make sure there are no cuts or cracks, and each line goes to where it is supposed to using the diagram in the FSM), or see if you get a strong squirt of fuel down the throat of the carb when you advance the throttle quickly (do that check with engine off, airfilter off, hold the choke open and use a flashlight down the throat of the carb). If you get a strong stream of fuel squirting down the barrel of the carp than you likely have a vac leak somewhere, or a misrouted vac line.

good luck.

i agree with petros. the stock carb only looks intimidating because there are so many hoses and difference devices hanging off of it. but by reading the FSM chapter on emission controls, you can see what each thing does and how it does it, and they are all extremely simple. each device has a job, like giving more gas when it's cold or advancing the timing under certain conditions, etc. most of the devices have a valve or lever or arm that is engaged or disengaged when vacuum is applied or taken away from it. so all you have to do is make sure each device is working, and that they're hooked up correctly so they're getting vacuum at the right time. the FSM makes that really easy.

besides that, you just need to make sure there are no vacuum leaks from other sources. that just means making sure the carb mounting nuts and manifold bolts are snug, and that all of the various diaphragms hold vacuum. if they do not, the hoses going to ruptured diaphragms need to be plugged until the diaphragm can be replaced.
