'85 SR5 6spd Federal Distributor Rebuild...TURTCEL

Post by TURTCEL »

So I should have my new vacuum advance today. I am getting ready to undertake the replacing of my vacuum advance and cleaning/regreasing of my stock dizzy. I have posted questions on this topic already and have gotten great responses and some very helpful tips for when I dive in.

My question this time is that I want to make sure that I have everything possible in front of me when I start so that I am able to take the dizzy apart and put it right back together while it is all fresh in my mind. Besides the new vacuum advance what other parts should I buy that are common to need replacing on these cars so I am ready to go?

New parts I already have include: cap, rotor, wires, and vacuum advance.

New parts I think I should order before starting: new dizzy o-ring and....?

I have no issues with the dizzy itself except for the bad avance unit as of right now but I was wondering what else I should get. With 196k miles on the car I was wondering if I should order a new signal rotor? The price is affordable and it seems to me that the part might be something recommended to replace but I have no idea. Any suggestions on the signal rotor or any other parts that I should aquire before starting? What about the gaskets in the dizzy? Where would I even find those if they needed replacing or can I use a little silicone if I need to?

And just a couple of quick install questions. Instead of setting the motor to #1 top dead center before pulling the dizzy can I just mark where the rotor and housing are to the block before I pull it and just set it back to the marks after the rebuild and be ok as long as the motor does not get turned over? I have done this on my old Chevy Impala years ago and my little "84 Yota pup about a year ago and had no issues with the correct install. Just thought I would stick with what I know. If I do need to set it to #1 top dead center before pulling do I need to set the timing to anything first since I have it advanced to 10 degrees BTDC right now? I know stock is 5 degrees but after reading the forums I have also found my Terc to run better at 10 like most others. I would also still mark the dizzy before pulling if I did set the motor to #1 TDC?
Thanks for any help on these inquiries.

Peace

there are internal bearings, but they do not fail that offen, if they are good I would reuse them. the large external O-ring you must get, yes. I think there is an internal seal or o-ring as well on the shaft inside the housing, but I never took one apart that far (yet). I would get one of those too. there is a thread with pictures about rebuilding the distributor, go find it and see what else it recommends.
