My drivers side window has gotten hard to roll up to the very top. I get about 2 inches from the top and then it sort of jams up. If I try to roll the window up hard with the handle, it fells like teeth or something is slipping inside the door. I can get out and kind of lift on the window while I roll it up and get it to go up but that's a pain. I'm going to tear one of the parts cars doors apart first to learn how to get in there. Does anybody have any hints on making this job easy. I've always had trouble getting the inside door panel off. More trouble getting it back on.
I also have wind noise in the same door right up by my left ear. If I hold my fingers up where the door meets the frame I can quiet the noise down a bit. I don't think the noise is coming from where the window goes into the seal. There is a small space between the door and the frame. I think that's where the noise comes from. I was thinking of adding little bits of weatherstripping and see if that changes things. Any other ideas?

I've had the same two problems you have with my tercel. I fixed the rolling problem by putting white grease on the rolling mechanism for the window inside the door. You can take the door panel off first lifting the top trim piece off (it has little clips that hold it to the frame of the door). Then you need to remove the window handle (there is a little c-clip that holds it on the roller shaft). Remove the screw behind the door opener, the screw in the door handle, and a large screw sort of in the middle of the panel. After this, grab the bottom of the panel and pull. There are little tabs that hold the panel into the door frame. They should all pull out easy and the panel should come off.

Inside the frame of the door you will see the rolling mechanism. Put white grease on the gear teeth. You will also see a rail that a little plastic wheel rolls in; put grease on the rail too. With the door still apart, put the window opener handle back on the shaft and work the window up and down. Add more grease if you have to. After a bit, it should open and close easily.

About your weather stripping. I have a similar problem right now. I think it's just a matter of getting new weather stripping if it is available. Maybe talk to a body shop parts supplier? You can also try re-seating it and re-sealing.

Hope that helps.

Both of my windows had the same problem on my old Tercel. GTSSportCoupe is right on with the removal of the panel, just don’t lose the clips and you might need some new plastic tabs. Be sure to examine the little white plastic roller that runs on the rail. There is supposed to be a small lip on the roller that keeps the roller on the rail. On my old Tercel, the lip wore off and the plastic roller kept falling off the rail. I made my own lip with a washer and small screw. I just screwed the washer into the edge of the roller. Worked fine after that.

The real pain for me was the clip behind the window handle...rest was fairly easy. Use lots of grease and oil...tighten any loose screws/bolts.

For air noise:

I had a set of plastic deflectors on an Escort once...made it very quiet with the driver's window wide open...problem was you didn't get that nice wind blowing in though...worked too well. Just found these for the '83 and up Tercel. Hope they fit the wagon.

Success! One more reason to love this car. I discovered 4 teeth broken off on the window mechanism. A good mechanism was on one of my parts cars and now it's all back together all greased up and better than ever. I adjusted the equilizer arm and now the window seems to seal better than it did before too. Maybe the wind noise will be gone. If the noise is still there I might try the wind deflector.
The found the Shop Manual to be very easy to follow too. Thanks for the support.

Logbear, which service manual are you talking about? The PDF here?

And a question for everyone: What did you do about the plastic liner between the panel and the door? Did you just rip it open or what?

I think the wagon and 4-door hatchbacks share the same doors. At least the front doors, I think HB's driver's door is from a hatchback.

I actually have the book that is the same as the PDF file available here. The real Toyota book. The book stays in the car and now I can look at the PDF file here at the kitchen table too!

The plastic liner thing in my cars door was stuck on with some gooey black stuff. I carefully pulled the plastic off and some of the goo stayed on the door and some on the plastic. When I was done I just stuck the plastic back where it was and the gooey stuff seemed to hold OK so I put everything back together.

It's mostly the regulator that causes jamming, and unfortunately we don't get to greasing them until the damage has already been done.

I did some maintenance on my windows and wrote about it here:

I also had the window problems with my 1983 Tercel. I actually read a specific tip in a Chilton manual. The first ever. The suggestion was to use a thin cloth and position the edge between the rear of the window crank handle and the door panel. Then you move the cloth back and forth around the handle base until the retaining clip snap ring is removed. I used an old thin sock.
This trick worked to perfection. It was a suprise and Chilton usually write in extremely vague generalities, and skip many (what I think) important steps.

I also used grease and I think I had to position the track with a small tie wrap for maintaing alignment.
And for that plastic. I wanted to keep that on to block out cold air in the winter. OK, I admit it, I used duct tape to cover up the holes in the plastic, and to attach it to the door :D
