Okay, here goes, this is undoubtedly the lame newbie question of the month!
On my '83 4wd 6-spd, in the engine compartment on the driver's side up above the master cylinder--what the heck is the black can with multiple wires, a vaccuum hose, and a cable that attaches to the accelerator cable down at the linkage? The FSM I have is an '87 and I can't find a mention of that darn thing anywhere. What does it do, and, more importantly:
Where does that long vacuum hose connect to?
Thanks!
Jim

That would be your non OE, dealer installed cruise control.

Re: That black can above the master cylinder
sounds like a cruise control to me. Where are your cruise "on", "set" and "resume" switches on the dash? Any vacuum source will do as long as it has vacuum when the throttle is open.

Excellent, thanks splatterdog and Petros, I appreciate the help. I had the feeling it wasn't stock. It looked like it didn't belong, like an afterthought, which I guess it is. And that little dinky wire tied onto the accel cable with a plastic cable tie is pretty sketchy looking. Not sure I'll keep it--it's pretty corroded. I'll check out the controls this afternoon.

Yeah, the control for it is (was) a little mini-turn signal looking device screwed into the left side of the steering column housing below the turn signal, with the cabling run up between the column and the housing. Not too hokey if you're not looking for it, looks better without it, though. Less crap cluttering up the engine compartment, too.
