My brother wants to try and swap an E engine from a 1990 tercel into his 1987 4wd.

Is this even feasable? The E is mounted sideways and the distributor sticks out what would be the back. Would engine mounts work out at all?

Besides the problems that you have mentioned, an E series engine will not bolt up to the bellhousing that is designed for the A series engine (ie. the one in the 4wd tercel). There will also be problems of EFI, exhaust, engine mounts, etc. It is possible to do these sorts of things with custom fabrication etc, but really not worth it for a crappy E engine (in my opinion anyhow). If the goal is more power, your bro' is better off considering installing a 4age from a rwd corolla gts. Still lots of work, but at least it'll bolt in.

Those E series engines are terrible. Unless you want the 4E-FTE (130 hp) then its not worth it. The 3E's only have about 4 more horsepower than the 4A-LC.

I think the 5E-FE is a decent engine, but the earlier carbureted 3E's are terrible. I had one and it didn't idle right and got really bad gas mileage. They work great when the carb is not messed up, but the carbs always go bad after time.

thanks all.

Actually it is a carby, and it gets 40mpg!!!
That's the real reason he wanted to swap. The 2wd it is in was hit, has no muffler and holes in the trunk. <_<
