Has anybody removed and replaced the oil seal on the rear of the transmission, where the drive shaft comes out?

The manual says you need a special puller, which I can't find in any auto parts store. The fact that there is a shaft in that hole makes it a little tricky to just use a pry, and pop that seal out. Also, there is that dust cover that just gets in the way.

Ideas?

Get a quote from a mechanic? ;) I'm thinking of just paying someone to do my 4wd shifter oil seal. There are very few things I won't do on my own car...but sometimes you have to draw the line.

If I remember when I get home, I'll take a look at the pics in the factory manual and see if I have any ideas for you.

For the rear driveshaft seal...all cars still have the output shaft in there...haven't done one, but I doubt if it's too big a deal. Did have a bushing (auto) replaced once.

With the 4WD shaft...best bet would be to find a scrap of 3/4" plate and make a c-clamp type thing for that...CLOSE FIT. I'm going to watch mine drip oil...it's a contemplative exercise that reminds us of the passage of time....or some such bullpucky.

I have done it with a screw driver. Not pretty but hey the seal was gone anyways.

To do it properly there are three tool designs.

Check out this place for the designs

<a href='http://www.klsupply.com/HandTools/ht-Re ... lation.asp' target='_blank'>http://www.klsupply.com/HandTools/ht-Re ... ion.asp</a>

and there is the one pictured in the manual. OTC makes that one.

If you do, do it, it is not hard but it is time consuming. Its also a good time to change the transmission oil. If you are going to change the trani oil I used a windshield washer pump to pump the oil.

Keep the old seal as it makes a good surface to tap to drive the new seal in.

Crap!!!!! That's a GOOD idea to use the windshield motor as a pump! I have just the pump to do it to.

Thanks
