Hey all,

Just wondering if all the 3AC tercels have the same gas tank?

My 86's tank is really rusty on the outside; and the fuel return pipe is rusted right through (was leaking gas). It seems that most of the 2wd tercels at the wreckers are in much better shape, so I'd like to try to get a tank out of one of them if it is the same for the 4wd.

Thanks!

With out really knowing the answer...I'd have to say no...they aren't interchangable. The gas tank has to fit into a limited space and has to conform to the axle and bodywork...this pretty much says it is going to be unique to the wagon?

I wouldn't worry too much about the outside of it...except for the straps that hold it. Inside's where to worry?

My fuel return line is so rusty it's a wonder it doesn't leak...I'm probably going to use copper to replace it...easy to work with as far as bending it...won't rust. I've replaced all the steel brake lines in the back...isn't easy to do things under there.

Hmmm...ok. I have a feeling you might be right. My only hope was Toyota's knack for sharing parts between vehicles. The part that is rusted is the metal pipe that connects to the cap that holds all the pipes that go into the tank. Unfortunetely I can't really replace the pipe because it is welded/soldered into the cap. I could try to get a price on a new cap with the fuel pickup pipes and everything from Toyota. I bet it'll be pretty pricey though. I'm probably better off just getting a whole new tank from the wreckers (if I can find one in good condition).

That's great that you have replaced all those lines. I've really got to get around to that too.

Thanks.

No, they are not the same. 2WD wagons have the filler neck on the left side, 4WD's on the right. I purchased a new tank about 2 years ago for about $110 US. I dont remember the company name, but they were in the NE US I belive. Found them on a Google search. I will check my records tonight and see if I kept the receipt.

Couldn't find where I bought mine, but here are some sources. Some have pick ups listed as well. The filler neck was made onto the new tank and must be bent slightly differently from the original, as I have to add gas slowly or the pump shuts down.

Corolla, 84-88, aparently are the same tank.

I also have replaced some of my fuel lines with copper tubing. I routed them right along the old ones, and zip tied to them. They work fine and were very easy to install.

Good luck

T Pie:

Thanks very much for your help! I appreciate your taking the time. I actually found a decent tank at the wreckers today from a 4wd wagon before I saw your post. I got an ok price on it though.

Very interesting to know that the tank is the same between the tercel 4wds and the 84-88 corollas. I assume it is the rwd corollas? That means that if I ever convert to the rwd version of the 4age I can use the tank off of the rwd corolla GTS too! (An easy way to conver to the high pressure fuel system for fuel injection).

Thanks.
