Update:

Pulled the diff apart, here are pics:

<a href='http://mike.mounty.com/pics/transm/trans2228.jpg' target='_blank'>http://mike.mounty.com/pics/transm/trans2228.jpg</a>
<a href='http://mike.mounty.com/pics/transm/trans2229.jpg' target='_blank'>http://mike.mounty.com/pics/transm/trans2229.jpg</a>
<a href='http://mike.mounty.com/pics/transm/trans2230.jpg' target='_blank'>http://mike.mounty.com/pics/transm/trans2230.jpg</a>

Note the broken left bracket, a possible source of the problem:

<a href='http://mike.mounty.com/pics/transm/trans2232.jpg' target='_blank'>http://mike.mounty.com/pics/transm/trans2232.jpg</a>

Here you can see the wrecked drive pinion. The hole in the upper right is what allows oil to flow in/out of the diff. So to lay to rest, yes the diff shares the same oil as the tranny (this particular tranny).

Anybody know what the gear ratio for the front diff is? I'm just going to have a used diff shipped to me. But, I got two different ratios from two different junk yards, one was a 3.73 and the other was a 4.10.

Toyota stopped making the SST for servicing the drive pinion, btw.

Try CAREFULLY counting the teeth on the pinion and then the teeth on the ring gear and DIVIDING the pinion no. into the ring gear no...a real-time ratio....best way to be sure. Should have a ratio = to one that is available. B)

I could count from the pictures you post...quick count = 41/10 = 4.10

Does look like the bearing cap broke...causing the disaster. Interesting about the hole between the diff & trans.

Have that rubber ball joint/seal where the gearshift lever goes into the trans sent to a lab and ANALYZED for rubber TYPE so we know it is compatable with gear oil.....

Well, I did get the proper diff from the junkyard. Installed it onto the tranny, I had to make my own gaskets. I've also replaced the flywheel, and clutch parts. those were fairly easy to do. The real hard part was fitting the tranny back onto the engine. It's a 2 person job at the minimum. I found that if you use a tie-wrap, and tie the clutch fork to one of the mounting holes in the diff, you can rotate that fork forwads, and give you little it more space to work with. You then cut the tie-wrap when the alignment gets close.

It was already getting dark when I had a couple of bolts in, so i had to leave it like that. The main pilot bearing was crunchy.... replaced it with one that came with the clutch set.

Here is a pic of the new clutch parts:

Good job. I see too many adjustable wrenches in the background though. I hope that's not all you used.

Nope, just an adjustable wrench on the pilot bearing puller, cause it was non-metric.

For everything else, I always use 6 point sockets... It seems like the 12points strip the heads more often.

Hey sacwac.......

Curious about whether you found any parts or metal chunks missing from the ends of the drive axles?

Otherwise it looks like a ring or pinion tooth just failed..........or maybe the "saddle" that cracked?

takza,

I did not find any parts or metal chunks from the ends of the drive axles. It looks like teeth came off, and that bracket cracked.

Also, aligning the rear transmission mount to the body is tough.... It's as if the engine is twisted on its mounts in the counterclockwise direction (when viewed from top of the car, looking down). It wouldn't take much twisting of the engine mounts to cause the rear of the tranny to be off by 1/2 inch.

Got the tranny back into the car, FINALLY. Everything WAS working just great...... So I was adjusting my timing, and I set the 12mm combo wrench on the air cleaner.... Engine started to idle rough, and the wrench fell down into the belts. The wrench then went through the radiator, making a hole about the size of a quarter.

It was kind of impressive!!

Luckily I have that 86 sitting around, and I took its radiator. I'll probably take it's fan too, because its the 10amp fan.

Radiator swap was really easy! Now the car runs, and I couldn't be happier.

You lucky bastards, I wish I had a 10 amp fan motor. I've lost alot of tools and bolts left on the engine, but never in that way.

Be sure and drain & refill that trans after a few hundred miles....this is Mrs. Toyota speaking! ;)

Did you ever get that seal replaced on the 4WD shifter shaft?

Yeah, actually I changed the fluid after 15 minutes of "driving" while the car was all the way off the ground. Came out jjust SLIGHTLY discolored, no metal bits.

I changed the seal with a gasket puller available from Sears. Like a screw driver with a notch on the side. Took LOTS of effort, but I got it.
