Hey everyone, my friend and I aren’t able to get either front axle all the way into the diff. They are going in about 3/4 of the way. Feels like the splines on the new (not reman) Cardone axles wedging in or something.

Try harder or switch methods?

Thanks!

this happend to me and others on this site
i had a bad differential that i took apart to get the gear that the shaft slides into
i coated the shaft with valve lapping compound and hammered the gear back and forth onto the axle untill it would go on freely
i mailed one of the gears to another member who fixed his the same way

i would not force it in
it may never come back out
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

I have replaced my cv axles a handful of times now (I've had 2 tercels since 2001). I have also replaced a torn boot on an otherwise good axle and had good results. I was careful to keep it clean while installing and do a good job with the glue that holds the two halves together. It held until I did the lift a couple of years ago which I find can be necessary.
I would use the boot replacement kit again if the axles are good and it's just a torn boot.

check the spring clip works properly and is not too big for the slot. Also, if it has new cut splines, you might be able to polish it with lapping compound or 800 grit wet and dry sand paper to take off the sharp corners and machine marks on the tops of the spines, and than clean it really good, and give it a try. I also find that putting grease on the spline and spring clip help to get it all the way in.
