Squeaky (steering) wheel gets the grease?

Post by ccmt »

Hi All,
The steering wheel on my '86 has been making a lot of noise these days. Its a kind of squeaking squealing a bit like a quieter version of peeling out. I was hoping I could just spray some lubricant up in there an that it will fix the problem. Any recommendations on lubes I should use or avoid?
Thanks,
Calen

I would check the horn ring first to see if thats making the sound. Over time, the dielectric grease wears away, leaving a non-lubricated brass-on-brass mating surface. Get the steering wheel in an easy to remember position, loosen the giant nut under the horn pad, then hit the backside of the steering wheel with your fists, or mallet, and it should come off. The brass horn finger will be on the column switch, and the brass ring will be on the backside of the steering wheel. Clean those up, reapply dielectric grease, and see if that fixes your issue.
