My car is a 1987 Toyota Tercel DX Wagon RHD 1452cc 2bl manual driven car
In my car. what is the normal torque need to rotate the engine manually in neutral gear?
Normal torque need to rotate the engine manually?
Re: Normal torque need to rotate the engine manually?
Dumindu,
No help with numbers, but you should be able to spin the engine by hand in nuetral. It should spin pretty easy and you will feel the compression points. It will be more difficult and then get easy again.

I concur with NWMO. You should be able to rotate the engine by hand and feel it get a little harder as the pistons come up on compression.

if you remove the spark plugs, you should be able to spin it by hand no problem. I do that when I am adjusting the valves, I can grab the alternator pulley and fan belt with both my hands and move it to the next position with a little effort. or I can put a ratchet wrench on the front pulley nut and it moves very easy with one hand.
if you have a lot of resistance than there may be something wrong inside the engine. though usually you will get other symptoms when it is running with so much internal drag.

Re: Normal torque need to rotate the engine manually?
Thank you all very much for your valuable answers.
I have measured the torque needed to spin the engine.
I removed all the spark plugs. Car was in the neutral gear. I did put a 27cm long spanner to the nut of the crank pulley. I connected a spring scale to the other end of the spanner. I pulled the scale in a right angle. It was 10-11kg when pulley starts to spin.
Since 1kg equals 9.8N, 10kg equals 98N.
So the torque was 98N x 0.27m = 26.5Nm
26.5Nm equals 19.5 lbft

Re: Normal torque need to rotate the engine manually?
sounds within reason. That does not sound like it has excessive drag.
next time I have my spark plugs out I want to try that, that is useful information to know.
