Front wheel bearings

Post by kitchman »

Hello again, this time it’s front wheel bearings. First it appears that two types were available, ATM and Koyo. Does it make a difference which one is used? Also would appreciate a shopping list of all the seals, dust covers and races required to do a complete job. I know if I had it all apart I’d have a better understanding of how it all comes together. The illustrations just don’t do it for me. Does the bearing, seals etc all go into the steering knuckle or not?

there is one large inner seal on each front wheel bearing, and there is an inner bearing, and and outer bearing. the bearings have separate races, but they are part of the bearing set, you can not buy them separately.

as I recall, there is a link in the repair guides section to either a series of pictures, or a video, of the steps in the process to replace the front wheel bearings and seals.

Thanks for all the replies!! I had actually watched Robert's video a few times before posting. I watched it yet again this morning and it's starting to become clearer. Not trying to be critical, but rather wanting to fully understand the process, there is a area in the video where he is attempting to install the bearing but didn't see the outer seal and race put into the knuckle first? Thanks again!!

Just checked rockauto website and the Beck Arnley seal kit 052-3281 shown in the video lists only one seal where as the National 5695 appears to be a complete kit?

Ok, I stand corrected, I googled the Beck Arnley bearing seal set 052-3281 and from vendors other than Rock Auto it clearly shows photos of the set as being 3 pcs. The photo on Rock should be updated. Also after an exchange with Robert I now understand what the bearing is about and please disregard my comments on his video " not showing the outer seal and race first" , didn't fully understand the concept at that point!

Thanks for the update kitchman,

I've found most of the pics are for decoration only. A lot of times they won't even be of the part that it's tied to, but rather a generic version.

Hey kitchman I'm in the process of ordering the parts for the bearing job. Does this kit service one bearing or both?

That kit is for one wheel, so you would need two kits.
