Oil shooting everywhere.

Post by Ellisdee »

I tried starting my car. It was hard starting but did. It was smoking profusely and wouldn’t idle. I looked at the motor and oil had shot everywhere. It was being sprayed out of the hoses on the valve cover into the carb. I’m stumped. What could cause this?

Ellisdee,

It sounds like loss of compression, allowing blow by to pressurize the top of the head, etc. Hard starting could point to poor compression as well.

Nope. Just checked the compression 160 plus per cylinder. I removed the hoses and cleaned everything up. I pulled the PCV valve and plugged the hose to the carb. It started up and ran fine. I drove it 250 miles with no problem. I’m stumped.

over filled? bad PCV valve?

usually with worn rings or damaged/worn cylinder walls it allows blow by to pressurize the crank case, allow oil to get blown out of the PVC line into the air filter. though the compression should show at very low (110-130 psi ranger, or lower).

there might be something else allowing oil to get pumped into the air filter housing, but I can not think of what else could cause it.

good luck

I’m guessing a bad pcv valve. I’ll replace it and see if it runs with the new one. I’ve never seen anything like this happen.
