Rumble After Lift

Post by Abletobecain »

Hello all,

So I lifted my offroad rig a couple weeks ago. I had lifted the rear a few weeks before that with no issues. However, after lifting the front I'm getting a nasty rumble from somewhere.

All the following new parts were installed: strut mounts (stock), struts (KYB 363037), springs (MOOG 81043), inner and outer tie rod ends (stock), and ball joints (stock). Everything was torqued to spec and I got an alignment afterward too. Still a rumble. I just re-torqued everything and there's still a rumble. LCA bushings looked fine...so did sway bar bushings.

The rumble is there at every speed but faint at lower speeds while shaking the steering wheel a bit at higher speeds. It seems to oscillate a bit, but quickly.

Any ideas? Too much of a lift with CVs rubbing in the boot? Has anyone that has done this lift had to shim down their carrier bearing on the rear drive shaft? Although it really feels like the rumble is from the front.

Next step is tires so when that happens it'll rule out unbalanced tires but the ones on it now were the same as before the lift with no rumble. Idk...just searching for ideas at this point.

Thanks!

Able,

I used the same MOOG springs with new struts, etc. and have the Pathfinder springs in the rear, with no change to the carrier bearing and no issues. I would speculate you may have a half-shaft that isn't happy with the changes. I've put a little over 8,000 miles on my half-shafts with the lift and 14" wheel/tires with no issue. In fact, I really like how the car drives.

Add spacer blocks to the transmission and engine crossmembers to solve the unhappy CV angles. This is commonly done when lifting Subarus of similar vintage and helps preserve the original angles, prolonging the life of the CVs.

Chris...I was wondering about that as well. They were brand new and felt fine but I guess they could be bad. I was under her yesterday and found a tiny bit of play when wiggling the passenger inner CV joint. Is this normal? Now I'm worried one of them might fail and/or destroy my front diff. I have the same lift as you...I wonder what's different? I was thinking about swapping back the stock strut assembly from my parts car but I don't want to pay for another alignment. Perhaps I just order some new half shafts instead.

Prof...I was thinking of that as well but I'm not sure that's the problem and I'd like to preserve the added clearance of the lift. Plus, as Chris explained above...same lift...no rumble.

sounds like too much angle on the CV joints. that will wear them out very quickly. you have to lower it so the angle stays small, or work out a way to reduce the angle on the joint by lowering the engine/trans some how. Not sure how it can be done on a Tercel, to get much change would take some cutting and welding of the cross member and perhaps the oil pan and engine mounts. shimming down the cross member would lower the engine, but it could also change the suspension/steering geometry perhaps.

Iggzmon,

Prof runs Subarus as well and that is what he has pictured. He also has a Tercel. I believe the Subaru includes a pretty significant body lift which in turn lets them run larger tires.

Correct, this example probably has a 4 -in. lift with ~27-28 -in. tires.
