S/T,

I can't say I have seen that on mine, but it's probably there. Yes, it looks like a typical vent with the loose fitting top that is pinched to keep it on.

it is the vent,,make sure the cap spins free and not plugged up with dirt,,,the trans/diff will build up pressure when hot this lets it escape ,,,to much pressure in the diff will allow the seals to weep,,the seals will only stand 3 to 5 psi before leaking

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

I have never seen that vent before on any of the many Tercel4wd (and several 2wd) trans I have owned, changed out, or seen before. might have been added at the end of the production run.

they might be the same spline, but I have never compared it. it would be a lucky coincidence, the front diff was unique to the first and second gen tercel, never before seen or used after 1987 again. the rear axle OTOH was used in the corolla and other earlier rear wheel drive models. there is no reason for them to match, except perhaps the factory had that size cutting tool to make them. for the volume of cars they produce however, they could have used all new design and tooling for the "new" first time front wheel drive from Toyota. They have never used this configuration for FWD again.

it is an 87....and an A/T(dunno if the automatic part matters) definitely the end of the production line.

balanced gears would make sense. as well as working with the same milling for each then discontinuing the fwd diff housing production...
RockAuto doesn't appear to sell rear axles for the tercel to compare specs

checked a manual trans this morning the vent is up by the input shaft, yours being a auto the diff uses gear oil so they they put the vent there, also checked a axle the spline is larger on it 25mm in diameter

so grabbing a spider from the easier to access rear diff to hone a new chubby cv axles input spline would not work out.....was just an idle thought.

i got them honed using a diamond bit on a dremel, cut nice and slow.
