Engine timing question

What is the correct of these two methods of engine timing?

No 1:

Align
1.Crankshaft pulley mark on 5-10 BTDC
2. Cam pulley hole on the middle arrow mark on the head.
3. Distributor rotor on the 1 st ignition pole.

then start the engine and advance the distributor for fine tuning.

No 2:

Align
1.Crankshaft pulley mark on 0 BTDC
2. Cam pulley hole on the middle arrow mark on the head.
3. Distributor rotor on the 1 st ignition pole.

then start the engine and advance the distributor with a light to get the ignition at 5-10 BTDC.

I use number 2 method all the time. gets it close enough to start it easy.

if spark is too far advanced it may not be easy to start, so having the timing less advanced assures an easier start.

After having the engine apart for other sercive or even a rebuild, the fist start up is always risk for trouble, or unnoticed mistakes. by setting the timing at about zero, it is one less thing to worry about when getting it running.
