My daily driver appears to be running cool as well. I swapped in an SR5 cluster when I first got her but the temp needle never moved (diagnosing now). I swapped back the original cluster before my trip over Snoqualmie Pass last week so I could watch the temp but the needle never moved above about 1/3 of the way. I may go get an aftermarket gauge as you suggest, Petros. I did preemptively order a couple thermostats to have on hand...I think they're MotorRad if I'm remembering correctly. My question is what else should I replace when I'm doing the thermostat? Water pump seems like an obvious one, but anything else while I have the coolant drained?

pictures of Thermostats;

left one is Gates brand (made in usa, note lightweight spring).

middle one is quality brand from unknown source (removed from car, about 4 years old)

right one is Asisn brand (made in Japan) from Rockauto.

Good call on the vinegar treatment, Tom, thanks. I remember reading your thread on that a while back.

Man, there sure is a difference in those t-stats! Looks like I need to order an Asisn. They're not on Rockauto at the moment though.

HA, Peter! I just checked the Stant SuperStat #45758 I just removed, and it has little wussy springs like the Gates you posted!
I wonder the thickness of the springs on the Fail-Safe #7214 that replaced the above?

according to pic of the Fail-Safe #7214 t-stat on the internet, looks like the not so good spring.

Thanks, Peter; I could not find that photo - just a "generic" Fail-Safe image.
Looks I will be ordering the Kuzeh in a couple of months as a backup.

rockauto now has both aisin and gates https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.ph ... 90&jsn=384 with more substantial spring.

Toyota genuine parts looks better if thats worth anything, and looks substantial. I can get this at the local stealership, for within a dollor or two of this price with gasket-https://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-TOYOTA ... 1317624372

We have taped up the grill to limit airflow, experiencing basically the same issue as the OP. Temps not very consistent, and running really cool at higher speeds. taped grill has helped somewhat, but is an actual band-aid solution.

I am finding on rockauto and elsewhere, that *most* of the T-stats with good springs share the part# that my yota dealership gave me- 9091603046. I havent seen any bad units with this number.

The Kuzeh I'm putting in a 2000 4cyl Camry today bears the same OE number on 2 different stickers. I'm always impressed when a part has a multi decade/car run.

the link below has a Tama brand thermostat for on sale for $14. (made in japan, photo looks well made with heavy spring). appears normal price for this t-stat from toyota is about $20 on line. This t-stat fits a lot of cars, from Tercel and MR2 to Camary and much more too form other car makes.
