Carburetor base gasket tightened with grease?

Post by Dumindu »

My car is a Toyota Tercel 1987 4WD 1452CC DX Wagon.

My car is having a problem. Car cannot be accelerated (yield power) beyond a limit.

Carburetor base gasket is not tightened with a adhesive. 1 mm thick gasket (made of packing paper) is applied grease and tightened. Can air penetrate such a thing and cause vacuum leak?

you do not need to use anything
but i always use non-hardening gasket compound
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

are you using a home made cardboard gasket? Usually if tightened down evenly that would work okay, but poor quality cardboard could indeed create a vacuum leak. check all the base bolts are evenly tight (not too tight).

search for a vac leak using some kind of spray like starter fluid or something flammable, spray it around gasket with the engine running. If the engine speeds up when you squire the fluid at certain spots, it means you have a vac leak at that location. if you have no vac leak at the gasket, than the home made gasket is good enough.

if you do, and you can not get the correct gasket, you should buy proper gasket paper from an auto parts store and cut it out. using grease is not a bad idea, it allows you to reuse the old gasket if you can get it out without damage, but some kind of sealant (fuel resistant type) will give a more reliable seals if you do not have the proper gasket available.

good luck
