Vibration and Very Loud and i have no idea what

Post by xirdneh »

My friend brought his tercel over today for me to test drive
he said it was vibrating
and so it was
i have never driven a tercel that was so loud from what seems like a vibration
starting from a stop on level paved road, at 30 mph it starts and gets very loud by 50 mph
it is a deep bassy tone that echos thru the cab
when i let off on the gas nothing changes until it coasts down to 30 mph
my first impression is that its a vibration gone to the extreme but i have no idea what is causing it
it seems like its coming from the front but i am not sure on that
i felt nothing unusual from the gas pedal
engine sounds and runs well
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

bad engine mount? exhaust harmonic?

also, possible you have a bad u-joint on the drive shaft. even when not in 4wd, that shaft spins at the speed of the rear wheels, if it is out of center it will vibrate and make a lot of noise through the floor of the car.

Might be a wheel bearing. I had the same thing happen just a few days ago. The outer race was cracked so I replaced the wheel bearing. Noise went away for a few miles then immidiately came back. The axle nut backed off and the bearing wasn't sitting right. Tightened it back up and all was well.

I knowcif the exhaust pipe is pulled too close to the drive shaft or is it a propeller shaft ? Anyways the spinning round shaft that is connected to the rear diff .if its too close to that it will vibrate .
I used to laugh at the man with a pinto  , until I became a humble servicer of a tercel :|
