Rear engine plate/bellhousing plate seal

Post by slimdude85 »

Howdy all! I'm finally getting my engine ready to install in my '81 Tercel and realized that in the past 37 years the seal (circled in red) has gone missing. First question is how necessary is it? And the follow-up: If so, where can I find one?

I do not think I have seen one of those on any tercel for over ten years. it is just a dust and gravel cover, keeps it out of the flywheel/clucth area. but I drive 3-4 miles of steep gravel roads daily to get home and go to work, and it has not caused any harm that it is not there.

it is a hard rubber or plastic cover, usually they get brittle and fall apart as the car ages. I do not think I have ever seen a good one. I suppose you could make one out of a thin aluminum plate, but I really do not think it matters much. yes, I have found a small amount of sand in the bell housing when I pulled trans for other service, but you also get a lot of dust and debris off the clutch as it wears anyway. I do not think it would make much difference if it is just omitted.

my daily driver as 400k miles on it, and never had a good one. I have also owned perhaps 8 other T4wd, and I think only one had it in place.
