Oil drain plug torque value

Post by mountaindude »

Do the oil drain plugs have a specific torque value? If so, where to find them for 84', and 85'?

they probably do, and it's probably in the FSM under general maintenance - oil changes.

What size wrench fits your drain plug? 14 or 17 mm?

I have seen both 14 and 19 mm only
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Autozone/advance/oreilly carry oil drain plug seals that are metal washers with a molded rubber seal, they're basically infinitely reusable and cut the required torque to just snug. They also won't leak, ever. The Tercel uses the 12mm ones.

What size are the plugs on the 5 speed transmission?
But...did you try hitting it with a hammer?

I replaced the filler plugs on my manual transmission with aftermarket 19mm spanner size plugs. They have bigger hex heads and are easier to remove I found. I did the same with my wife's 2004 Rav4. Why does Toyota make the head so thin, to reduce drag? The drain plugs I've replaced with ones with recessed hex heads so that they don't protrude.

they use the thin head plugs for clearance on the underside I suspect.

Your solution is brilliant! particularly for the hard to reach filler plugs where clearance is not an issue.
