This is an underhood harness, driver's side:
http://i.imgur.com/fT4mRJw.jpg Overview
(note that the pigtail on the bottom is a green/white and white/green set of pigtails that I soldered replacements onto; they had push-on terminals that were falling off and not original)
The clump of wires at the top, including a fat red wire with no markings and various "normal" 18 or 16-gauge wires with red and yellow color schemes where not connected to anything at all. I wish I could shank the previous owners for all this nonsense I shouldn't be having to fix, but as I'm not a fan of fires and faulty wiring and blown fuses, here we are!
Other questions:
What does L stand for on the factory wiring diagrams?
Under the dash, I found a black wire with thick insulation, a single-filament core, and some woven copper shielding. It was just twisted together and taped with painter's tape. WTF is it? It hooks up somewhere behind the HVAC boxes and travels to the driver's side.

Help me identify this harness
But...did you try hitting it with a hammer?
Re: Help me identify this harness
Not sure but that green connector looks like it might have had a cap on it and is a port to check the voltage from the O2 sensor.

Almost looks like the connectors for the distributor.

Re: Help me identify this harness
I think it's the alternator and distributor harness. Tomorrow will be in the 60s and I'll try and hook it all up. I hate winter SO much. Will also install the new battery cables I fabricated.
But...did you try hitting it with a hammer?

Re: Help me identify this harness
Alright, so the plugs went to the starter solenoid, the distributor, the oil pressure sensor, and the large white connector going to the fuse box/power distribution box. What is the red/yellow wire bundle for? Where do the green/yellow and yellow(or white)/green wire go? I am missing those two connectors entirely.

Re: Help me identify this harness
I recognize that harness, there should be two wires that go back to the transmission for reverse and either the 4wd or the EL switch for the idiot lights, depending on year.

That is the harness that goes on the battery side of engine the small tabs go on the engine block and the other goes to starter .the two big ones one goes to distributor and the other goes to a monkeys uncle because I'm sitting on the side of the freeway overheating .

That sounds like a cut and taped antenna wire to me

It was. I just tossed it in the back, our local stations mostly suck anyway.
