Front wheel bearing size

Post by mtc1984 »

hi guys im new here. im trying to replace the front passenger wheel bearing on my 86 t4wd. I have removed the old bearing from the knuckle. the new bearing is a national 513002. here is the kicker i pressed it in and the outside race hid half of the c clip groove (clip install impossible). I pushed the bearing back out and compared it to the old outside race and sure enough the old race is not as wide. its 1.22 inches and the new national is 1.29 in. I cant see any part numbers on the old bearing or the spindle. When i took everything apart the spindle nut was hand tight after removing the cotter pin and the inner race and hub pulled free from the outer race without any tools. it appears that PO put a new half shaft in. it looks shiny and new. i am assuming the bearing failed because the halfshaft is designed for the 1.29 wide bearing and with the 1.22 bearing in insufficient clamping load of the inner races was achieved causing premature failure. All the documentation i see for a 512002 bearing shows it should be 1.29 wide. The only doc i could find with the 513002 bearing showing a 1.22 width was a timken bearing guide. a quick google shows summitracing carrying a timken 513002 spec of 1.29 width so im totally lost. What is going on here? do i have the wrong spindle on my car? when i was pulling the old bearing my inner seal looked nothing like the new seal and back up ring. it was metal on the outside edge and more robust then the new outside 2 peice seal i have and the one shown in the youtube video. Maybe that seal is a clue but i see no part numbers on it either.

welcome, mtc1984.

i don't remember this topic ever coming up here before. i think the best thing will be if someone has a spare front wheel bearing kicking around that they can measure for you. i don't have one but someone else should. hang tight.

if you found the clip groove was half hidden by the 1.29" wide race, making clip installation impossible, i would guess that the 1.22" is the correct size. the bear failure could be due to the CV axle nut simply not being done up tight enough, allowing the axle to slide back and forth inside the bearing.

1.2178inches is 30.93212mm not 33mm

none of the part numbers yield any clues via google fed mogal crosses with timken and national 513002 which is too wide

713002 used in the video also crosses with 513002 which is too wide

i just measured a hub from 4x4 tercel
looking at the side the bearing is installed into
approximate measurements using dial caliper
overall thickness is abt 2.235"
distance from top down to bearing seat (ledge) is about 1.793"
distance from top down to bottom of snap ring seat ( beveled ledge) is abt .603"
distance from top down to top seat for snap ring (ledge) is .443"
the snap ring is .096 thick
so 1.793 minus .096 + .443 = 1.253 space for bearing
a 1.29 thick bearing is not going in there

i am wondering about that 1.299" measurement shown on rockauto for 513002
that could be the distance measured at outside to outside of the inner races of an assembled bearing
the outer race could be less than that
