Update: using putty knife and a lot of hammering, I got the oil pan off. They didn't even use a gasket, just a LOT of the sealant stuff.

Cleaned up the oil pan and strainer really good, swapped oil pumps, used cork gasket (coated both sides in non hardening sealer), got oil pan installed again.

Installed water pump, fuel pump, timing belt +cover, valve cover, getting closer!

We have a 1st gen vs 2nd gen dilemma, it looks like. The first gen engine we acquired looks to be missing a mounting point for the alternator and AC mount. Is it okay to use this without the one mounting bolt attached or is there something we can do to get around it? All the other mounting bolts like up except this one.

I'm thinking because there will still be four mount points it'll work. I'm going to put it all together and see how it looks.

you will likely be okay, but toyota did add that mount for a reason. I would make a mount out of an aluminum bar that comes off that boss on the lower edge of the head right above it, and mount the misusing support for cast iron AC bracket to it with an appropriate nut and bolt, or thread the hole in aluminum bracket. it will give it some more support that way.

We are! I was most anxious about the alternator, the dude we bought the car from took the alternator. Then bought us a replacement. I thought the mounting bolts were gone but found them in the battery tray

Had to remove the pilot bearing from the crankshaft, that was fun. Had to rent a puller and a slide hammer, and the puller wouldn't fit. So I had to macgyver it in there.

Going to attempt installing the engine tonight.

Engine is in the car! Had a heck of a time getting the transmission and engine to line up properly, and then the engine mounts wouldn't line up. Had to take one of the engine mounts off, attach it to the engine, then slide it into it's bracket.

nice work. getting the trans to line up properly is almost always a bear. sometimes I manage to get it all lined up and it pops together, other times I have to fight it and wiggle it and jack both the engine and trans, adjust, adjust, adjust alignment, nothing seems to work. It helps if you use the face of the flange and the back of the engine as a guide to get the parallel, and get the pins and bolt holes to line up (rotation), but something it is not obvious why it will not come together.

Had to take over a month's hiatus because it was too hot, we were also sick, and when it wasn't too hot, it was thunderstorming (never any rain, just thunder and wind storms). My kingdom for a bigger garage so I could just pull the car in there!

This weekend though I finally got the rest of the underside work involved with the engine swap done, torque converter bolts (may they rot in hell), stiffeners, air suction, exhaust, etc. Rock auto sent me an exhaust flange gasket that was too big (7AC or something) so I had to go to autozone for a replacement.

She's finally ready to be taken off the jackstands and the carb, AC, power steering, and all the electrical connections connected  maybe in a few days... back inside right now because it is too hot.

Got everything put together! Cranks fine, oil light went out after 10-15 seconds or so.

She almost started, unfortunately something is wrong with the carb and it flooded out the engine hardcore. Like at first gas was coming out of the float bowl vents. That eventually stopped and now it is seeping out of somewhere into the secondary (and assuming primary).

Going to see if I have another carb, even a marginal one to try.

How do I unflood her?
