ISO: "Rain Gutter" roof rack mounts

Post by MrWrench »

Hey everyone. I'm looking to put a roof rack on Spud to have some more room for supplies during a road trip this summer.
I'm having problems finding the mounts needed to mount a basket or rack to this car.

Does anybody have any for sale by chance?

I have found really nice older style roof racks at garage sales, Good Will, salvation army, pawn shops, and similar second hand stores. Cheap, not many cars can use them anymore. good for Tercel4wd.

When people get their newer cars without rain gutters, they hate to sell their expensive Yakima or Thule rack (or similar), so they hang on to them for ten plus years. when they realize they do not make cars with rain gutters any more they eventually donate to a second hand store, or sell it at a garage sale, or Craig's list, just to get it out of their garage.

keep your eyes out for them, they show up.

What Petros wrote!
I owned a bike shop for 30 years, and just recently was talking to a best buddie shop owner "from the days," and he said that Saris/Thule/Yakima racks for rain gutters are a dime-a-dozen nowadays, because of the change in car bodies.
Naturally, owning a T4WD, I'm set for eons (well, at least until I croak) with my old Minoura.

Thanks guys! I tried searching Craigslist and Facebook marketplace and came up empty. I will check out a few Goodwills in the area over the next week or so! hopefully I find something before summer!

I am going to fix up Spud and take it on a roughly 2500 Mile road trip with some friends this summer. Having the extra storage space is going to be extremely handy!

I scored a set of the thule 300s awhile back from a guy that found them at a junk yard for 40 bucks. Here are some on ebay but you'd have to find the load bars that fit.

I bought a Yakima rack, with ski, bicycle, and a lot of other accessories/attachments (most of which I have not used) at a garage sale for $40. it actually works on our lexus because rain gutter hooks on the rack will securely grab the built in roof rack tracks. It came with adapter pads to put on the rain gutter "feet" for going against the flat roof. It will work on my Tercel, but I have adjusted to fit on the lexus right now, my wife is not keen on throwing ski gear in the back of "her" Lexus.

I also bought an ancient rain gutter ski rack at a good will store for like $10, that I can use on the Tercel (I have it adjusted to fit), when I do not want to just throw the skis in the back. it saves a bit of fuel economy, all the little arrows going over the roof do not get caught and tangled in the rack and skis, eating up fuel along the way. But if I have passengers, it is more comfortable to just put the skis on the roof with my cheap rack.

I have another rack I think I paid $4. it is just simple pipes, not other fittings. I occasionally use it to put lumber, kayak or a ladder or similar long items on the roof of the Tercel. It is a bit inconvenient, requires a wrench to tighten the clamps, and rope and tie down straps. Cheap price and worth having around.

Thanks guys! I put a bid on the BaileySims posted. If I don't win that one, I'll check a few local second hand stores. I don't garage sale shop often, but I'll definitely try and find some this spring for one!
Thank you so much everyone!

I found one on Craigslist pretty cheap ! It was designed for a full size van, but with a little sawzall action and reinstalling the rubber caps. It should work perfectly!
Thanks for all the help guys!
