Uncomfortable amount of play in the steering wheel . I can go almost a quarter of the turn of the steering wheel before I get a resoonse.oh yeah 83 sr5
I used to laugh at the man with a pinto :lol: , until I became a humble servicer of a tercel :|

check all of your tie rod ends, ball joints and bushings,and u-joint on steering shaft, for too much play. Often excess play means too much slop in the system. If all good, than you either need to replace the rack (too much internal wear), or you can try removing the sealed cap and adjusting the lash between the rack and pinion parts. there is a thread to a link that shows you how to adjust the rack and pinion clearance, I think in repair guides.
