WTB: transmission front main shaft bearings

Post by 4wdEconoBox »

My first gear started popping out a few months ago and has gotten worse and worse, I can't even used first gear anymore. So does anyone have a good pair of these bearings? I'm assuming it's only 2 of them...

these bearings should still be available, they are generic bearings. I thought there was a thread on this topic, listing the bearing part numbers. But I could not find it. here is one on transmission seal part numbers:

viewtopic.php?f=16&t=11801

forum member Xirdneh know the part number for these bearings, he might even have some extras. perhaps he will chime in.

3a. Bearing in aft end of Main Case for Output Shaft is KOYO 28NQ4020NRD 1.1012” ID x 1.573” OD x .7843 THK, 28mm x 40mm x 20mm. Has groove for snap ring. Toyota part No. 90369-28002 “Radial Cylindrical Roller” Available out of China only . (Updated 05-01-2014)
4. Input Shaft Roller Bearing info. This Bearing is inside the tyranny pressed into the Intermediate Plate. Approx 1.339” ID x 2.282”OD x .549” or .510” Thk.
It is located at the highest point in the tranny subject to wear first, if oil level is too low.

KOYO RNU070614 Toyota part # 90365-34003 34mm 58mm 14mm recess .03mm
KOYO RNU0713 N/O 34mm 58mm 13mm .02mm
NSK VP34-2 N/O 90363-25025 34mm 58mm 14mm .03mm
NSK VP34-1 N/O 90365-34003 & 01 34mm 58mm 13mm .02mm
They all have a recess cut around one outside edge (53mm dia) and it is used for a retainer (12mm bolt and small plate) to lock bearing in place. The 14mm Thk bearing protrudes aft far enough for the large Idler Gear to make contact and that is probably why the 13mm Thk bearing is used. The Idler Gear is unlikely to hit the bearing because the angled teeth force the Gear aft away from the bearing. I have not seen any sign of interaction on trannys with 14mm bearing. KOYO RNU070614 “Available” (Updated 05-01-2014)

5. Bearing (roller) for forward end of Counter Shaft (pressed in Intermediate Plate) D8(or B)503004 NSK TORR N/O, KOYO BTM3021A. 1.1805” ID x 1.497” OD x .916” Thk. 30mm x 38mm x 23mm Toyota part No. 90364-30003 “Drawn Cup Needle” (Updated 04-08-2014)

Tested while on shaft, extreme movement .007 for new .018 for worst (came out of white car that towed trailer, seems to have caused problems towing in 5th gear)

Bearing for aft end of Counter Shaft pressed in Transfer Case KOYO BTM1825A, IKO TA1825 ROLLER BEARING, NSK-RHP FJL-1825 ROLLER BEARING .706” ID x .985” OD x .98” THK. 18mm x 25mm x 25mm. “Drawn Cup Needle” “Available ““Toyota part No. 90364-18001.abt $21.00. Maybee BTM182520 would work? Available out of China only (Updated 05-01-2014)

6. Bearing on forward end of Idler Gear NACHI 6306NSL, NSK 6306N, NSK HR6306NX2, NSK 6306NR, GM 12334745, 2947761,907423, NISSAN 4321021050,43215A0150, RENAULT 23312714. 1.178” ID x 2.833” OD x .748 Thk. Toyota part No. 90363-30019 & 45. .Has groove for 2.625” ID x .066 Thk snap ring. 30mm x 72mm x 19mm. This bearing is “Widely Available” 6306NR the NR means it has a groove and snap ring. Bearing can be with or without shields. I clamped the bearing in a vise so the Idler shaft was pointing up and set a dial indicator at the highest point (on the side) and wiggled the top end of the shaft. The range of the worst moved .045” and the best .020” (new bearing .010”). The one that moved .038” came out of a tranny that had a bad input shaft bearing (the roller in tranny) and the good one out of a tranny with only 130,000 miles on it. When I held the good one in my hands and tried to feel the movement it was hardly noticeable but the worst one was very noticeable. (Updated 04-08-2014)
6a. Toyota part No. 90364-18001 (4wd), 90364-25002(2wd) these are probably the same. This bearing is common and “Available” “Drawn Cup Needle” (Updated 04-08-2014)
7. Bearing on forward end of Extention Housing Output Shaft NACHI 62/32 C4, NSK 62/32@2, NSK 62/32. “Available” 1.255” ID x 2.5575” OD x .6675” THK, 32mm x 65mm x 17mm. (Added 03-28-2014)

three most common reasons that i have seen for popping out of first gear
1. Bad front output shaft bearing, causes output shaft to move fore and aft. (it is the same bearing as the one on aft end of input shaft)
2. The synchro meshing teeth worn out on first gear (not the gear teeth)
3. The Slider that moves over the synchro and 1st gear synchro meshing teeth thus connecting them together. its internal grooves are worn out

Ok, thank you guys so much! I haven't had a chance to really work on my car yet because it's my daily. But tomorrow I'm borrowing my uncles car for work so I should be able to pull the trans to start tearing it apart!

If it was the bearing would I hear a bad bearing noise like a whirring sound when the clutch pedal is pressed in?

If it was the syncro would it also cause problems with second gear? Because 2nd gear has always grinded? Ground? when I downshift....

I do not know what sounds might be made as i have never driven tercel with bad front output shaft bearing.
I have driven some that had the bad syncho mesh teeth and bad slider.
2nd gear grinding i would guess worn syncho. Original style carb keeps revs up for better shifting (throttle positioner) If TP is not working or you have a Weber carb that will cause some noisy shifting.

if the sycro is marginal, sometimes you can do an ATF flush (50/50 ATF and gear lube, driven for a few days, drain hot, refil with good gear lube) and it will clean out deposites and improve the performance of the shifting.

but if you have worn out and sloppy main bearings they should be replaced, new bearings will hold the main shaft in position better, which will keep it from popping out of gear, and make shifting more smooth.

I really need to do the ATF flush, I just haven't had the time honestly. I'd be more than willing to bet that it's the main bearings starting to fail. My car has over 300,000 miles on it and for the past 8 years while it's been in my possession, its had regular gear oil changes, but I can't speak about its prior history and I do drive the car pretty hard.

I'm sorry in advance for being so dense, but I'm completely lost when it comes to finding out how/where to order the new main bearings.... If anyone could walk me through the best way that'd be appreciated, because when I look at xirdneh's detailed post it just confuses me past the point of no return honestly...haha

I figure while I replace the main bearings it'd be a good time to replace the 1-2 gear synchro too, I know you can't find these new, but does anyone of y'all perhaps have a decent used one that you'd want to sell me?

I'm also going to replace the clutch and pressure plate when I pull the tranny, since its been giving me issues...

bearings noted "3.", "4." and "6." are the only ones i have ever seen go bad
so that's all i would replace
if you have noise when clutch pedal is up and it goes away when you push the pedal down that's "4."
if no noise i probably would not replace it.

When 4th gear starts grinding, is the trans repairable or is the trans at the end of it's life. It doesn't go into 4th anymore, on overrun it can hold for a half a second. Cars over 300k on it.

it is rebuildable if you can still drive it. if you drive it until it disintegrates, it all becomes scrap metal.

Either repair it soon, or you will have to replace it.

on the 85-88 trannys they use a bolt instead of a roll pin to hold the shift fork to the shift shaft
i have taken a few of them apart where the bolt had come unscrewed and fell out of the 3rd/4th gear shift fork
the owners said they had gotten worse over time shifting into third and fourth until the screw fell out and shifting was not possible

Top tip: After not much luck with googling for a few of the bearings, I discovered CST Bearing in Santa Ana. They were able to source a 32RT06S3LRN bearing when no one else could. I imagine if you're having trouble finding the others I'd give them a try:
