Re: WTB Good 3A Head
I find it hard to believe someone actually cracked a Toyota head. I have driven them way too long with the temp pegged in the red zone, and have seen them after the piston or valve broke up and slammed into it, but never crack one, never found a crack.
Unless a serious defect managed to stay hidden in it for 30 years, it may not be cracked at all. Or some shop made a mess of it somehow. Or the engine broke up internally to damage it (which means they will need more than a head).
I would be curious to know how that happened.
I may have an old head kicking around, it would need to be rebuilt (new valve guides, seals, resurfaced, etc), but should be free of cracks. I will have to take a look.

Re: WTB Good 3A Head
Peter: This is the engine we bought from an 81 Tercel four years ago that had been "recently" rebuilt and yet blew the head gasket shortly after being installed into the car. I redid the head gasket. Car seemed fine and ran for another three years on that head gasket. I drove it 3,000 miles for work this year before selling it.
I did notice that every now and then at idle the temp would go to 3/4 but thought it was just being funky.
The guy I sold it to, I'm not sure what happened, but he managed to overheat it to the point oil got into the coolant. The shop trying to fix it is the one that found the crack.
Also Peter, if you remember the 84 we bought off of you, it ended up having a crack between two of the chambers and we had to get another head when rebuilding that one.

Re: WTB Good 3A Head
it is possible to crack it if driven without coolant too long, and it gets the head really hot, and badly distorts it.
I have also seen the temp jump up and down inexplicably like that, usually it means the T-stat is about to fail, which might explain what happened to the new owner. Replacing the t-stat when you see temp fluctuations usually solves the problem. Do it before it is too late.

Re: WTB Good 3A Head
have only seen one cracked 3a head so far
it was a small crack between intake and exhaust valve seats

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Re: WTB Good 3A Head
Yeah I think that's where the crack is on the head I have.
Edit: might have found one semi local they're going to pull and check it. fingers crossed!
