Question On Timing Belt Kits...

Post by ARCHINSTL »

Well, it looks like I will be again doing the water pump - from a new Carquest pump from Advance in 2014  ; it is squealing after only 3K+ miles  . It is covered by warranty.
So - I will be doing the timing belt, cam and front crank seal as well, as well as finally installing the 3 new heater hoses and again vinegaring the radiator and a first for vinegaring the heater core (what is the emoji for "trepidation" on the latter?).

All parts houses seem to sell the same Felpro front cam and crank seal for $6+/- each, so that is moot.
The question is -
ADV and AZ sell the house brand Carquest/Duralast (actually Dayco) kit - belt-idler-spring for $52-55, so that is a wash.
O'Reilly sells the Gates for $55 - as does RA, but for quite a bit less.
I can get the Dayco (and seals) next day from AZ.

Opinions on Dayco vs. Gates?

I sent an email to my stalwart, Butler Toy in Indy, for OE parts, but am awaiting a response - but expect it will be a HECK of a lot more than the other vendors.

Opinions?
Thanks,
Tom M.

After having some pumps fail prematurely, I avoid those two kits. Luckily none ended in disaster. I try to source Aisin as they are an OE supplier. Their pumps frequently have the OE name machined off the pump casting. Of course OE gets a thumbs up..

I'd vote Gates over Dayco, but only because they manufacture quality performance parts as well.

Your tensioner is probably fine, I'd just replace the belt, especially if you previously replaced the tensioner.

Sorry for asking what may be a stupid question - what is Vinegaring?

Well, I went ahead and got the Gates TCK070 kit from Rock Auto: It was $26.79 (O'Reilly $55)
Front cam seal National #1987 - Closeout $1.36 (other stores $6+/-)
Front crank seal National #223235:P - Closeout $2.26 (other stores $6+/-)

Shipping is a complete rip-off, like so much of R/A shipping charges: $14.98 for what - a weight of 2-3 pounds? Now granted, I requested 3-day mailing (arrives by Tuesday) and this is obviously not air shipping (!), but even the cheapest, 10-day shipping was $8.00.

$8 shipping isn't so bad at rock auto, but you will pay out the nose for any sort of expedited!
