Re: Rebuild kit for manual tranny, w/ bearings & synchros -- on eBay
that is really tempting, that was about how much I had to pay for the only one I could find on the internet several years ago. different brand, but parts appear similar.
It would be less costly to buy the parts separately, but you would not get any gaskets, and the syncros are not available either.

Didn't rebuild kits also come with the gears too?

That's a really good price. I paid $750 for mine a couple years ago from a local shop.

Re: Rebuild kit for manual tranny, w/ bearings & synchros -- on eBay
usually transmission kits only come with the "soft" parts, seals, gaskets, bearings and syncros. most kits do not usually include all of the bearings, the Toyota trans is full of lots of needle bearing assemblies that go on each shaft, but these seldom are bad unless the trans was run dry. On the more popular trans they might also included commonly known parts that wear out like shift forks and linkage bushings (or have them available as supplemental kits).
Usually if you need "hard parts" like shafts, gears or shift forks you have to buy new ones from the dealer (if they are available), or there are a few specialized trans supply houses that stock good used transmission parts, there used to be one in Portland that has Tercel4wd parts in stock, not likely any longer.
consider the market: typically it would cost $1000-1500 to remove, rebuild and replace the trans, with a clutch a few hard parts necessary that will go to $2000. Considering you can buy beat up but whole running Tercel4wd for $500-1000, and good clean runners sell for $2000-3000, there would not be a very big market for rebuilding transmissions on Tercels. That may change if they become desirable enough to sell for $5000 routinely. That seems very unlikely since I have been looking for a nice 4wd SUV to drive, we can get a nice 15 year old Lexus RX300 AWD, or a Highlander AWD, with under 200k miles for about $5000-6000.
It is possible Tercel4wd may take on collector value some day, but that means they have become rare, so not likely there would be enough of a market to make kits available. Seals and the larger bearings are all standard items, it is the syncros that make the kit worth getting. This kit cost more than finding a good used transmission, and it even cost more than buying all those parts separately, if they were available (actually everything except the syncros and gaskets are available, total cost for bearings and seals is about $180 for more than you usually need). Total cost of the syncros when they were still available was less than $200 from the dealer.

glad to see at least one of these kits went to a forum member

here is something similar but without the syncros, not a bad price, you get all the paper gaskets too. shows two left.

He must have a stock pile and is gauging value. They keep going up in price every time one sells.

Are the gears in the 2wd Trany the same as 4wd
Interchangeable?? Is the question?

Re: Rebuild kit for manual tranny, w/ bearings & synchros -- on eBay
yes most of the gears, bearings and shift forks are interchangable
1st gear has different qty of teeth between early and late year 4wds so thats the one to watchout for
also the main idler gear set is different (the small gear end) between early and late year 4wds

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.
