rolling back an odometer

Post by irowiki »

Has anyone successfully rolled back an odometer?

I tried unsuccessfully if i could do it again i would just switch the odometer out with the other one.

The whole set of wheels pop out but the little tabs(snaps) that hold it in are VERY BRITTLE that's where i got into trouble and had to glue it back in.

I'm not sure if the odometer wheels are the same between sr5 and non sr5 clusters but the chances are good that they are.

i attempted to roll an odometer forward once but ran out of patience. i'd like to know if there's an easy way to do it.

incidentally, i believe it's illegal to tamper with an odometer at all. just something to keep in mind in case BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING (that one goes out to takza).

It is illegal because of unethical car salesman but if your attemping to tell the true miles of a car rather than lie abought miles knowone cares.
But i'm sure you already know that BIG BROTHER!

I swap SR5 clusters into my DLX'S, so my cars end up with at least 100,000 more km on them. It would be nice to get the mileage accurate for sure.

David, did you use a drill to roll yours forward? Ha?

yes, i was trying to use a drill but i didn't have any bit that fit snugly, and it still took forever. eventually i figured screw it, if we ever sell the truck i'll just tell the buyer it has 30,000 km more on it than the odo says. just wasn't worth the time and frustration to mess with it.

I did the same but opened Up the chuck on the drill so it sat flush to the first tenth mile wheel worked good for spinning it but after a half hr and 60 thousand miles i realized a million was a long ways away To bad it didn't work backwards

There is a YouTube video of a guy doing a rollback on a Toyota truck, same age as our tercels and he was able to do it successfully. He also expos explained that so long as it's done to match your odometer and not be deceptive it is legal to do. I'll find the video when I'm home to see if anyone gets something beneficial from his info.

I didn't realize that you could "snapp" the wheels on the little tabs?
I think access Is a little diffrent on our cars but the odometer design looks the same

I just want to set an odometer to match the pretty 61,000 miles in our 87 FWD when I put a SR5 cluster in it. Nothing shady
