In my 4wd I manage about 28 combined. I don't see why the automatic would be much worse. I'd just take 3 or 4 mpg off cuz of the auto tranny, and how you drive it.

There is an existing thread on this topic with lots of inputs. Most get about 30-32 hwy, a few claim to get as much as 38 mpg. The auto versions really suffer city mpg, highway not as much. Go read the thread from the archives to see the full range of responses.

2wd will be slightly better with less weight and rotating parts. I've heard of hatchback owners breaking 40 mpg no prob.
The auto cannot achieve the same mileage as a manual(all other things being equal). The stick has overdrive and no slippage. The auto has no overdrive and a non lockup torque converter is usually slipping 100-200 rpms while cruising.
Neu- 3-4 mpg is still substantial. If one drove 15,000 miles a year, 28mpg would cost $1976. 31 mpg would cost $1785. Both figured with our current price of 3.69 per gal.
This is why webers pay for themselves pretty quick when replacing a fussy carb. My 84 only took 6 months or so to pay for it self, as it was seeing lots of miles at the time and it's improvement was drastic.
My personal best 34.8 And I'm certainly not a hypermiler.
Loaded heavy for ice fishing and with excessive idling and winter gas 27-28.

I am going to try a couple of tanks of pure gasoline to see how much difference it makes. You can find stations that sell pure gasoline (ethanol-free gas) from: http://pure-gas.org/
Some claim up to 10 percent better economy, which means buying it at 20 or 30 cents a gallon more would put you money ahead. Our old carburetor engines should run much better on pure gas because that is what it was designed for.
