My '83 is now 4AFE powered!

Post by c0z »

Finally got my T4WD on the road and running awesome, and couldn't be happier! It now has almost double the power, and gets probably double the mpg. No pics of the final engine bay at the moment, but I will get some tomorrow. Bring on the snow

Congratulations! that is just awesome. how did make the distributor work? Cut out the fire wall, or go distributorless? Tell us please! where did you get the header?

how can you get double the mpg? I would guess going from 30 to perhaps 40mpg, but double?

I can not wait to see pics!

I could see going from 20 to 40 if the old carb was running poorly.

So what is the 4AFE from? And how does it differ from the 4AGE? Honda engines are so much easier to diagnose, and figure out where they came from. lol

Nice work on the project, get pics!

Cut the firewall. Right now I just have a piece of dynamat type insulation sealing the hole, need to fab up a piece of tin yet. I made the header myself. Cut off the factory 4AFE flange and welded on some bends, along with the factory prizm downpipe. It's extremely simple, not designed to flow well (but will do the job), and is pretty comical actually.

The MPG comment is definitely unproven at this point. My 3A ran rich/poor, and was getting 20ish. I was just lazy and didn't want to mess with the carb. The best I've ever got with this 4AFE was 43mpg on the highway with a tailwind in the tin-can geo :)

The donor vehicle was my '89 Geo Prizm I drove for a year or so. It was rock-hard reliable, and I could drive it anywhere. The car body and suspension-wise had seen waaaay better days though.

This is after we got done pulling the motor, and having a little fun with with body. (cell phone pics)

Ok, still haven't taken any final engine bay pics I appologize.... it's snowed a ton here the last month, and this thing is seriously unstoppable in the snow with the new power and nice tires it has on it! I'm lovin it.

I was wondering if you had to modify the bell housing on the trans to mate with the 4afe?
Also I was considering doing a 7afe swap into an sr5 I don't wanna mess with carbs either.
Sorry for all the questions I will use the search option as much as possible still trying to learn this board.

No bellhousing modification required. Swapped the 3A flywheel and a new 3A clutch disc/pressure plate on the 4AFE and mated everything up. I don't mind questions at all.

Once we get out of the single digits here maybe i'll snap some pics and actually make a good work log thread... ha

Ah, so the myth is true that all A series motors can use the same trans then.
Good to know very good to know so this means the frankin 7age can work as well.
I come from the e series world so I'm trying to soak up info for my ideas or plans.

Im also thinking in doing a swap with a 4afe, so you just take the 3a out and put the 4afe without doing major changes?
please can you post photos

im not sure if the 4afe ecu can handle it... but people with the 20 valves have been avoiding cutting firewalls by running coil on plugs on the stock ecu. use the dizzy as a cam angle sensor. heres a wiring diagram using some honda coils if you want to give it a shot and a link to the original posts.

It looks good but I am confused about something here. I thought the only reason to cut the firewall was to accomodate the dizzy which this setup uses for cam angle. How does that eliminate cutting the firewall?
An engines potential to produce power is based
mostly on it's cylinder head design.
