I've been hearing some weird noises under my car recently, so jacked up my car to take a look. I had just finished driving the car a fair amount. I put my hand on the transmission when I was under the car and found it to be suprisingly hot! Almost too hot to touch! Anybody ever felt their transmission after a bunch of driving? Is this normal? I recently topped up the trans fluid...

FY!: The wierd noises were not comming from the trans.

Where were the wierd noises coming from?

And a transmission does generate a lot of heat. It's one way people start bushfires without realising it. They take their car off the highway where it's been running failry hard and run it thhrough a paddock. A stem gets just enough energy to smoulder, which is self sustaining and away you go.

The amount of heat generated sounds normal to me. :)

With my heated fuel, the line WOULD get too hot to touch and it turned out that the warmest it gets is around 147F...so ALMOST might be around 125-130F?

Thanks for the replies all! I'm not too stressed about it now. I might eventually get it checked out by a trans shop, but I'm guessing its ok.

Also, keep in mind that the transmission will also act like a giant heatsink for the engine block. So it should be getting fairly hot.

What about all that friction that goes on in transmission? Doesn't that generate some heat?
