Ok, while I was fighting insomnia last night, a pyschedelic chimpanzee came and enlightened me with this gem. Here goes: If a 1c-l (diesel) and a 4a-lc mount into the same transmission, and If a 4a motor can be mounted directly into a tercel with a 3a, shouldn't a 1c-l be transferable to a tercel? (with some work of course) He then hit me with a banana and lept out the window.

I figure that the 4a and 1c use the same trans from veiled references in my Chilton's manual, and from looking at Napa and Schucks and seeing that the transmission rebuild kit is the same. I would guess that some custom motor mounts might be needed. Of course finding a diesel corolla would be the real challenge here in the states.

Has anyone here had any experience with the 1c? Are they good motors or would I be buying a pricey boat anchor? I'm just asking out of morbid curiosity since I've already got my project that I need to finish.

When I looked into it, it seemed like the transmission was actually different. I forget where I got that information from but it was probably the Toyota parts catalog I have on my computer.

Aww, that would be unreal to have a diesel tercel. Biodiesel is the wave of the future. If that is doable, I would be on that like stink on poo! Custom motor mounts maybe!

If this was possible, it would be nice to get one of the turbo versions (1C-T, 2C-t, or 3C-TE. The non-turbo version would not really be an improvement over the 3ac powerwise.

It might be necessary to change the final drive ratio of the tercel too. Otherwise you'll run out of rpms at highway speeds.

I think camrys were available with C-T engines.

A 7afe/ge would probably be a better conversion.

Sheesh, if that camry wasn't the whole way across the country I might go for it. I'll be keeping my eye open for something closer though.

I think they are extremely rare; the chance of finding one is going to be really slim.
