I know that the 85-88 people all have it, but on the 83-84's it was more like an option. I'm just curious who has it and who doesn't. I sure don't have it and that steering wheel requires some effort to move from a stand-still position.

Generally...I'd say it is popular if you have it...since I don't...it isn't popular with me. :D  B)

You could grab the power steering pieces off a wrecker car and install them on yours. Lots of work, but if you really want it, it is possible.

You'd need to get at least the following pieces and maybe more: The ps rack, resevoir, pump and bracket, all piping, crank pulley, belt. It would be easiest to install all these components with the engine out. So if you ever do an engine swap, thats the time to swap power steering stuff in. I imagine that the steering column and tie rods are the same between power and nonpower steering.

My manual rack has 220K miles on it and is in good condition except for around .003" " looseness in the bushing on the pass side. Wonder how many parts of a PS system would have been replaced by now?

Have replaced the steering shaft from the firewall down and 3 of the 4 tie rod ends.

Mine has 360,000kms on it and the PS is still original. Leaks a tiny bit from the rack, but not bad at all...

Yeah, I love the power steering. Delivering pizzas 4 days a week without p.s. would cause me to look like some freaky big armed-beer gut guy. And I'd much rather look proportionally out of shape! Plus, the p.s. on the terc is not too much, you still can feel the road pretty darn well.

I don't feel bad at all. Not having power-steering is a good workout I believe. It must feel weird to drive a p.s. car and then drive a non p.s. car.

People who use power steering are WIMPS eh takza?!?!?! Well, I DO have power steering, but I cut the power steering belt. This way, not only is it "manual" but I get to work against the hydraulic pressure!! I even inflate my tires to 5psi, and make sure to ONLY drive on sand, UPHILL.

You shouldn't torture yourself. :D <_<

If your PS has problems, you might try that Lucas stuff for PS...I hear it works for leaks.

I believe if I'm not mistaken the tie rod ends are different between p.s. and non-p.s.

I think the inner and outer tie rod ends are different and the shaft with 2 u-joints that goes from the steering shaft to the steering rack is different. I don't think the steering column itself is any different.
