Estimated value?

Post by Firekraken9 »

Is there a guide anywhere that can help determine the value of my car? It's not a 4wd but it's an '82 Tercel SR5 Hatchback. It's got about 136k original miles and is in fair shape. Needs body work (mostly paint and one dent. No frame damage) and its charging system is currently fried. Other than that, it runs well and drives well. With that issue, what do you think it would be worth? I'm trying to sell it and cannot find any guides or other previous sales to base my price off of. Any help would be great! Thanks!

That's a big dent, and selling a car that needs work before it can be daily driven is a huge factor. In its current state, I'd say $500-$800.

If you had about $400 worth of new parts included with the car, would $1000 be a good deal?

Wow, if I didn't just find a FX16 plus if it wasn't a carb car I'd be all over it.

Also what makes the charging system fried? If you said you'd take $500 for it I'd be heavily tempted to buy it...

I'm biased since I'm a big fan of the 1st gens. Especially the hatchback version. A downside for me is the aftermarket paint job. I prefer these old cars in their original colours. I think a reasonable price would be $1500-$3000 (that's Canadian. Minus about 25% for US dollars). Of course this would be a price that a collector/fan would pay, not the average person looking for a beater.

Weird. I've never seen or hear of a black Tercel in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd gens (or any generation actually).

I just looked up the color codes and they did exist after all. I've just never seen one. So my comment about the non-original color doesn't count anymore. As for the dent, the fender is probably the best place to have a dent since it's removable and replaceable. The charging issue doesn't sound like a big deal since I almost count on rebuilding/replacing the alternator on any vehicle I buy anyway.
For the record, I already have a 1st gen Tercel so even if it was in town, I wouldn't be buying it anyway, but I'm sure there would be lots of interest from the young hipsters. 35-year-old Japanese economy cars are the new 1960's American muscle cars.

Also, if the price is like $500 i would fly down in a heartbeat and buy this. I have 2 first gens ('81 2dr 7age swap and '82 4dr) currently, but this one would replace the 4dr as it already has a serious case of cancer :/

I didn't realize you had swapped a 7age into one of these. That's awesome. Have you posted pics of it on here? I want to see.

If you do buy this car, or any other 1st gen hatchback, please consider putting louvres on the back window. I've always thought that would look awesome.
